hi
i'm fairly new to poker, with my experience almost exclusively online.
i've read small stakes, hold'em for advanced players, and theory of poker.
i've practiced the theory to an extent online, in 2-4 and 3-6 games.
thanks to the books, i've improved tremendously in the past month.
a few days ago, i was invited to play hold'em at the casino by my uncle, so i went.
i played on a 5-10 table.
there were on average, 8 people seeing the flop, 6 peopel seeing the turn, and 3 at the showdown.
there were 2 that were extremely new to poker, throwing away 1-2 tousand in about 3 hours.
i lost.
even while trying to play a bit looser than usual, i saw the flop once an hour or so. (very bad luck).
once i did hit someone decent, any attemps at eliminating the opposition, like making them cold call a raise on the turn, etc, did not work!
everyone just kept calling and calling and calling.
in the end, almost every game was won by someone with like 5 7 off hitting a straight on the river.

i was told the 10-20 tables were much better games, and that the only way to win these 5-10 games was luck.
should i play on 10-20, where people have a better idea how to play, or should i try my 'luck' on the 5-10 tables again?

do you guys have any advice on how to beat the 5-10 games?

thank you /images/graemlins/smile.gif

You do realize that playing against people with no concept of either:

A) "how to play," or
B) the worth of "1-2 tousand" dollars

is a good thing, right?

Reread SSHM. You should know that these are the games you want to be in (the 5/10 you mentioned) as you are going to be paid off on any hand you make. Don't let some poor luck in one session get you dowmn. Eventually luck will even out for you.

yes of course.
i guess the main thing i wanted to ask was, is it more profitable to wait 4-5 hours to hit something very good at the 5-10 table, or play at the 10-20 table where people still suck, but to a lesser degree?
if i am more skilled than most of the players at the 10-20 table (if), wouldn't that be a much bigger edge? wouldn't luck be a much smaller factor in winning those games?

so i guess you mean regardless of the bigger stakes, 5-10 is where i should stay.
thank you for your opinion!

So you want to play the 10/20 game because you believe that you hae a skill edge over the players there and you believe that the 5/10 players are worse than the 10/20 players?

Does it not follow that you should be able to beat the 5/10 game for more BBs/hand than the 10/20 game? Your reasoning as to which game you want to be in does not make much sense; I don't know the specifics of your poker abilities, but most people who can't beat the 5/10 game easily aren't going to do well in the 10/20 game, as you describe them.

Wow, I want in that game. My salivary glands are working overtime just thinking about it.
