Idunno. I played FFXI for a few months and still have the GF.

Let's hope WoW isn't any more addictive.

Silvermoon here, but I don't play anymore. Haven't cancelled yet, though. It's just too time consuming.

I can't say I miss it. It's still very much a work in progress. I think in another year or so it might be an incredible game, but right now it's just too half-finished.

FFXI is way more time intensive. FFXI past 60 was just a huge drain. WoW is a timesuck but not as bad as the pure grind FFXI is.

from my experience it's really hard to just play the game "a little."

if i'd spent my WoW time playing poker instead i'd have an extra $10-$15k.

the massive opportunity costs are not worth it. i hope you quit before you get really into it. the only people who should play this game are gradeschoolers with nothing better to do.

That's a pretty lame generalization.

Sounds like a personal problem to me.

hey if you can play that game for 5-10 hours a week more power to you. it's the only video game i've ever played compulsively.

no, gradeschoolers often can't get or don't need to get jobs. if you have or can get a job instead don't play the game. it really can be addictive. do you play it?

I work full time, have a wife and kid, and yeah, I play it.

There are a lot of other 20/30/40-somethings that do too.

I'm not sure if you had some personal issues with becoming addicted to gaming or what, but that's not the case with everyone, and in fact, probably not the case for a large majority of gamers.

either way, no other game has had that effect on me. there may be others for whom this particular game is addictive who also have not exhibited compulsive behavior in the past. therefore, whether or not i have "personal issues" i still recommend people don't pick up this game. it's not like i'm the only one saying this.

I didn't really mean my comment the way I think you're taking it. I'm not saying that you have a problem with gaming and need to seek counseling or something like that.

To be blunt, it just seemed to me that you were blaming your lack of 10k-15k on WoW and that is just silly. Only you can decide how your time is going to be spent, and if you care about the money badly enough you will budget enough time for yourself that you make it.

if i'd had full control over how i chose to spend my time i wouldn't be using the word addiction. i would have been much better off never buying the game is all im saying.

i highly recomend doing this before you play:

think to yourself how many hours per day is a reasonable amount of time to spend playing WoW

then limit yourself to this when you start playing, and if you can't, you are addicted and you're just gonna have to quit it cold turkey

These games take a long time investment for you to go on raids and get anywhere. They're also filled with people willing to make that time investment, so you can easily fall behind everyone you know if you don't make the same time commitment.

Further, this game now has a PvP system in place that demands you put in hours per week to maintain your standing.

It's quite fair to say a game like this is much more addictive than other types of games. Other games you can play much more sporadically and still progress and stay competitive. Not so with MMORPG's.

That's fine if you're willing to devote the hours. It sure beats t.v., and doesn't damage your liver like going out drinking in bars. And it's about the cheapest entertainment possible. But it's far from the ideal game for people who don't have a ton of time on their hands that they wouldn't mind vanishing.

I am currently trying to quit WoW. So far I'm totally WoW free for 15 hours. It would seem that events are conspiring against my attempts at staying WoW free. Just thinking about the game makes me want to play it so badly...

This is one of the only games (other than Deus Ex, Half-Life and Diablo II) that I've played for 8 or more hours STRAIGHT (no food breaks nothing) and is the sole reason why I currently go to bed at 7:00am and wake up at 15:00pm. I dunno, it just doesn't seem worth it in any way, yet I currently find myself extremely tempted to play. You have to realize that at it's core it's nothing more than an item-hunt level-up game. That's what makes it so addictive, there's always the thrill of playing just a little more so you can get your Mining skill up to 175 so you can mine that Gold Vein. It's a bit ridiculous. I really hope you get tired of the game and start to see it's flaws. It only has 4 different quests that get rehashed OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

1. Kill X amount of <insert humanoid/beast here)
2. Find X amount of <insert item here>, found by killing <insert humanoid/beast here>
3. Go to <insert person/town/cave/dungeon here> and bring back <insert item here>

I challenge you to find a quest that doesn't fit into one of the above categories, other than the seldomly encountered "escort" quests.

Not only that, but there are the following stock monster types that just get rehashed OVER AND OVER AGAIN

1. Boars
2. Bears
3. Spiders
4. Wolves
5. Small humanoids (Kobolds/Murlocs/Troggs)
6. Large Humanoids (Ogres/Bandits/Gnolls)
7. Things That Fly

That's basically it. You're gonna see these over and over and over and over and over until you're entirely sick of them.

I didn't really mean for this to turn into a rant about WoW but yeah, it's really a lot like nicotine, just easier to quit.
