Has anyone here used a hypnotist to get rid of bad habits at the poker table? I know many peeps use them to quit smoking, so poker should work.....

I think there is some controversy to how effective hypnotism is. But if you believe it will work well, then maybe it will. That's what they call a self-fulfilling prophecy. But I guess since I rambled on about it, maybe now it won't work because you'll question how effective it is. Oh well, guess you might want to try something else. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

yeah, a freind of mine tried hypnotism to quit smoking, and the hypnotist stressed that if you don't believe in it, i will definetly not work.

It seems like hypnosis is a cottage industry:

That's funny because you could probably tell that to alot of people about alot of different things. Hey, maybe I should open up a superstition clinic where I give everyone a rabbit's foot for $100 and tell them that they MUST believe in it and it will work for various things. What do you think? Big business?

yeah, you might of heard of this experiment. they gave a group of people a placebo which hey said would make them immune to electric shocks, and another group they told them it would make the shocks even worse. and the group felt the effects they thought they would feel. psychosomatic works.

I use hypnosis occasionally in my practice as well. What I tell people is that, in regards to attempting to give up a pleasureable habit, one has to really want to quit. Even then, the success rates for using hypnosis for smoking cessation (with no other behavioral intervention) are only in the low 20s, at best.

I'm starting to believe people like to be told what to do. I used to be a stockbroker. The Senior Vice President I used to work under used to tell me that people like to be told what to do. I saw him make approximately $200,000 in one month. I believe him now.

Hypnotherapy has widespread scientific acceptance. In fact, it has been accepted as having therapeutic value by the AMA, since 1958. So hypnosis is hardly a novel, experimental, untested, or "new" therapy.

In my career as a professor and psychotherapist, I have hypnotized more than 20,000 people. It is a safe, pleasant way to alter behavior. The proof: I have never been sued. I have never had a single complaint at the BBB. And I have seen many people make substantial, positive changes in their lives.

At the risk of being immodest, I suggest those with a serious interest in the subject check out my text at:
