wow...my personal favorite is shelter from the storm, however, they are all awesome. A few years ago, dylan came to the missouri state fair. I went with this hippie chick, and we smoked massive amounts of pot. As we were walking across this big grass field into the fair, i saw a tour bus, a stage, some equip....HOLY [censored], WE ARE BACKSTAGE. Unfortunatly, dylan wasnt around. We got spotted, which isnt surprizing as the chick was in a long, flowing, tie-died hippie-chick dress, and i was ripped off my ass. However, we did eventually worm our way to front stage, got passed like 20 joints from people twice our age, and all in all enjoyed one of the best concerts ive ever seen. In a place called sedelia missouri. God love dylan.

Personally, "Just Like a Woman" and "Idiot Wind."

I saw him in October in Fresno, CA and in March in Oakland. Uhh, it was mildly disappointing, to say the least.

Rolling Stone had a poll a decade or so back for the best rock and roll song of all time. My memory is super rough as to exactly how it worked out, but I think it went something like, a bunch of musicians came up with contenders, and it finally got narrowed down to Born to Run and that great Dylan song -- I feel so dumb now -- where the guy is reaming out someone's ass mercilessly. You know, the one with the refrain of "How does it feel?" And lines like, "Ain't it hard when you discover that/He wasn't really where it's at/After he took from you everything/He could steal." Damn, I know most of the lyrics and can't remember the title. *sigh*

Anyway, that's by far my favorite Dylan song. Second up for me is actually the Hendrix-sung version of "All Along the Watchtower."

Bob Dylan
Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
Like A Rolling Stone

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say 'Beware doll, you're bound to fall'
You thought they were all kiddin you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal
How does it feel, How does it feel
To be without a home, like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?
How does it feel, How does it feel
To be on your own, with no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal
How does it feel, How does it feel
To be on your own, with no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin' thinkin that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you ain't got nothin you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal
How does it feel, How does it feel
To be on your own, with no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

Many to choose from.

Like a Rolling Stone
Desolation Row
Highway 61
Visions of Johanna
Leopard-skin Pill-Box Hat
Knockin'On Heaven's Door

Some recent songs have also been very good

Tryin' to Get to Heaven
Not Dark Yet
High Water

Still, it is hard to dismiss that 'Rolling Stone' is not the best song.

That's my third favorite of his.

I'm not well versed in Dylan at all, and have never counted him among my favorites, but it's funny how even if you're not a big Dylan fan, you can have huge affection for some of his songs. He's just too good for you to not find at least some songs of his you think are great.

I don't know how I missed Mr. Tamborine Man, although the Byrd's version of this song is actually better, IMO. This is probably also true (someone already mentioned this) of Hendrix's version of All Along The Watchtower.

This is why I'm confused. I know he is considered one of the best musicians of all time, but I don't know any of his songs. The only real memory I have is when he was on the Grammy's back in the early 90's and I couldn't understand a single word he sang. Girl of the North Country

Well, if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm,
When the rivers freeze and summer ends,
Please see if she's wearing a coat so warm,
To keep her from the howlin' winds.

Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
If it rolls and flows all down her breast.
Please see for me if her hair hangs long,
That's the way I remember her best.

I'm a-wonderin' if she remembers me at all.
Many times I've often prayed
In the darkness of my night,
In the brightness of my day.

So if you're travelin' in the north country fair,
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline,
Remember me to one who lives there.
She once was a true love of mine.

Thanks for that link. I downloaded those. I have to say, that Johnny cash WTFPWNs Dylan vocally and sometimes Dylan tries to get a spontaneous harmony going with Cash but seems to be trying to hard and it just doesn't click, but it's great to hear both of them. There's a version by Altan (Irish group) with a female singer that really rocks too -

My favorite cover is Nanci Griffin doing "Boots of Spanish Leather" - Bob actually played harmonica on that one and I think she played it for the 30th anniversary concert, though it was on video and not on CD

North Country, of course, is Northern Minnesota where Bob was from - (at least he calls it the North Country in his book) - I had an ex-gf from around there and that song used to make me pour another shot pretty fast - but it was a nice song nonetheless

The dude's produced about 40 albums over the last 40 years...

Many people have listened to a few of them. I've got about 15 of his albums in my collection and I consider myself a total n00b in the world that is Dylan's.

There are too many great works by Dylan to list just one favorite though Shelter from the storm, ballad of a thin man, Desolation Row come to mind.

I haven't seen any mention of his couple of talking blues works. I really smile at his rendition about the ferry boat/pleasure ship sinking in New York harbor. What's that called?

And there is no protest song like Masters of War.

Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie is TOO moving for words.

If you mean "has a close association with vomit, foul odors and pain" then I agree with you. If you mean "very good" you have never been more wrong.

It's a good song; superior to Boots of Spanish Leather. I believe 75% of Dylan fans would agree with me.

I don't think that many Dylan fans have such bad taste.

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last.
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast.
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun,
Crying like a fire in the sun.
Look out the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense.
Take what you have gathered from coincidence.
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.
This sky, too, is folding under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home.
All your reindeer armies, are all going home.
The lover who just walked out your door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor.
The carpet, too, is moving under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you.
Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you.
The vagabond who's rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.
Strike another match, go start anew
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

Here it is, TALKIN' BEAR MOUNTAIN PICNIC MASSACRE BLUES:

I saw it advertised one day,
Bear Mountain picnic was comin' my way.
"Come along 'n' take a trip,
We'll bring you up there on a ship.
Bring the wife and kids
Bring the whole family."
Yippee!

Well, I run right down 'n' bought a ticket
To this Bear Mountain Picnic.
But little did I realize
I was in for a picnic surprise.
Had nothin' to do with mountains.
I didn't even come close to a bear.

Took the wife 'n' kids down to the pier,
Six thousand people there,
Everybody had ticket for the trip.
"Oh well." I said, "it's a pretty big ship.
Besides, anyway, the more the merrier."

Well, we all got on 'n' what d'ya think,
That big old boat started t' sink
More people kept a-pilin' on,
That old ship was a-slowly goin' down.
Funny way t' start a picnic.

Well, I soon lost track of m' kids 'n' wife,
So many people there I never saw in m' life
That old ship sinkin' down in the water,
Six thousand people tryin' t' kill each other,
Dogs a-barkin', cats a-meowin',
Women screamin', fists a-flyin', babies cryin',
Cops a-comin', me a-runnin'.
Maybe we just better call off the picnic.

I got shoved down 'n' pushed around,
All I could hear there was a screamin' sound,
Don't remember one thing more,
Just remember walkin' up on a little shore,
Head busted, stomach cracked,
Feet splintered, I was bald, naked. . .
Quite lucky to be alive though.

Feelin' like I climbed outa m' casket,
I grabbed back hold of m' picnic basket.
Took the wife 'n' kids 'n' started home,
Wishin' I'd never got up that morn.

Now, I don't care just what you do,
If you wanta have a picnic, that's up t' you.
But don't tell me about it, I don't wanta hear it,
ÔCause, see, I just lost all m' picnic spirit.
Stay in m' kitchen, have m' own picnic. . .
In the bathroom.

Now, it don't seem to me quite so funny
What some people are gonna do f'r money.
There's a bran' new gimmick every day
Just t' take somebody's money away.
I think we oughta take some o' these people
And put 'em on a boat, send 'em up to Bear Mountain . . .
For a picnic.
