View Full Version : Downtown Las Vegas Poker

I'll be staying at the Fitzgerald Hotel in the downtown area all next week and I'd like to know if there are any decent poker rooms and games such as Holdem and Omaha in any of the nearby casinos. I usually play $4-8 to $10-20 Holdem with reasonable rakes at $2-3 per pot. Would I be able to find good games or will they full local "rocks"? When would be the best time or day to be in these games? Further, I'd appreciate if someone could suggest a good race/sports book in the same general area. Thanks for all replies. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I think Binion's Horshoe is the only place downtown with poker room, 12 tables or so. They have 1-4-8, 4-8 and 10-20 hold 'em.

Get yourself up to the Strip. Are you staying at the Fitzgerald (which I've never heard of despite living in Las Vegas) for a specific reason?

Of the four poker rooms within easy walking distance of Fitzgeralds, Binion's is your best bet. They are the only one of the four that spread Omaha. They have more games to choose from as well. I was up there earlier tonight and the place was hopping with lots of action players. If you want to avoid rocks, play at night. Good games and easy comps at Binions. Make sure you check out Johnny Moss's automatic weapon on display at the front of the casino. Who says Vegas doesn't have any history? There are plenty of sportsbooks to choose from downtown. Binion's and the Las Vegas Club should be worth a look. And I believe Fitzgeralds still has a sportsbook that is "Four Walling" ala Leroys.Good Luck H.B.

I'm guessing the reason is, it is very cheap.

Thanks for your suggestions. I've never stayed in the downtown area before always in the main strip closer to Xcalibur,MGM,etc. but I "inherited" my packaged trip when a relative backed out so someone had to use it. When in Vegas, I usually play poker at the Mirage, Bellagio or MGM and the latter also has an excellent race/sports book but downtown has always been too far for me to walk or even bus. /forums/images/icons/diamond.gif

I bet when you find yourself at Binions, the strip won't be to far to take a cab to. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

What's with Binions? Don't they have a decent poker room? /forums/images/icons/confused.gif

I play there once in a while. It can be fun or depressing depending on your outlook. Binions is an experience. Use your big-city coping skills. Be careful, particularly taking risks like eating. The people can be interesting. I kind of like it, but Binion's is dirty, run down, and has a lot of marginal people about. I mean, I've been in games with guys showing off the beautiful young thing they are with who just may be there for the money, guys talking about their travails in methadone clinics, guys with no teeth and oxygen tanks who play to get food comps at the buffet so they can gum down a meal, and everything in between. It isn't a family experience. The last time I played there, Clarkmeiter, Tommy Angelo, and I were all in the same room, so some of the people are cool. Enjoy. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

First let me state I live in Las Vegas. I love Binions for what it was and what it represented. It has a great nolstalgic feel for example big time blackjack, craps action etc.., the feel of the legends who once played there ie..Moss,Ungar,etc..but its time has passed the smoke is awful and the place smells like piss.Binions has gone down the tubes since Jack Binion left.Take a cab and go to the Bellagio.. Best of luck on your stay in Vegas.

I haven't been to Vegas for a few years now, but I used to love the Horseshoe. It had the best crap game in the world, and it had the atmosphere of an old time gambling hall. I never stayed there; the Nugget across the street was nice and had some cheap deals back then. Some of the other places downtown were a little scary; we stumbled into the Pioneer Club once. It looked and smelled like the Las Vegas knife and gun club... lol. Anyway, I'm just curious, what happened to the Horseshoe to drag it down?

Thanks,

Benny is gone, Jack is out, and Becky is running it. Maybe they have problems aside from that, I don't know. Binions was always well, Binions, but it is much dirtier and shabbier than it was. The gaming commission shut some of their games down recently because they didn't have enough bankroll. Can you imagine that when Benny was alive? No.

Since I don't live there, when I'm doing serious gambling, I don't really want to increase my overhead by staying in an expensive hotelwhere I'll probably only spend 4-5 hours in a day. When I go there for pleasure, I take my wife or girlfriend, I spend more time inside the room and therefore I stay in the aforementioned main strip.

I shall. Thanks for the suggestions. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

I understand, I just was explaining to Dynasty. No insult intended. I like the idea of "pure gambling" trip.

And I like Binions, as long as I'm not near a smoker. The food at the snack bar is pretty good. Probably softer games at the Bellagio, at least at 4/8, that's what Clarkmeister told me. Also, when I was at Binions it seemed the 4/8 game was sometimes tougher than the 10/20 games. The 1-4-8 games were pretty soft.

"I take my wife or girlfriend"

Yes, but how do you decide which to take, lol?

11-29-2002, 11:27 PM
What I really meant was I took the wife when she was my girlfriend to the strip. Can't really have both as two individuals as can't really afford to risk my life, lol. Gambling, yep but fooling around, a most definite no. Would be nice to have both though. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

When I was out in Vegas I would take the 301 downtown to binions for I believe two bucks(the entertainment value is priceless). Just don't play the shell game(hehe) I saw a girl get ripped off 100 bucks in about 2 seconds.

O yea, the reason i was posting. I thought that the 4-8 game was pretty soft. I took down many pots after the flop, this doesn't happen in AC.

"Anyway, I'm just curious, what happened to the Horseshoe to drag it down?"

Some people believe what happened was that Jack left and Becky took over.

He is no doubt trying to save some cash by staying in a cheaper room downtown. It is fairly easy (and cheap) to get from downtown to the strip by taking the bus. I'm actually kind of surprised you haven't heard of Fitzgeralds? Haven't you ever been to the downtown area?
