I'm moving to CA for the summer and want my car there, really don't want to drive it, any ideas on how to get it there?

I looked into shipping mine by truck last summer. It's ~$750--$1000 depending on the quality of service (door-to-door, do you want it covered, speed, etc.) Driving is cheaper, and more fun.

Moving company. You can either ship it by boat (may be cheaper but takes a long time), or pay some guy to put it on his semi-truck. Basically, call a moving company, they do this stuff all the time.

I looked into moving mine from CA to MN and it was going to be like 1500. Not worth it imo.

my friend got his car shipped for ~900 from sacto to DC. the time frame was 10-14 days for delivery. and he loaded his trunk up with tons of crap, so he basically got free shipping for all of his gear.

JTG51 recently moved from CT to CA. He drove it in like 3-4 days. He also set up a route that took him to a poker room a day (Sandia, Ameristar, Casino Arizona, Laughlin, etc).

This would be a good way to do the same trip.

I'll go. If daryn wants to drive it with me we could team up. Buy me a plane ticket back and I'll do it.

You will not be disappointed driving across the country, at least once you get through Illinois and Missouri and Kansas and eastern Colorado.

Actually, I may be moving to Vancouver this year, and have thought about how I'd get my car there. Just doing a little research, I asked for a few quotes from a couple auto-carriers from Philadelphia to Seattle...it was $1300.

It wouldn't be all that horrible, but the thing is they don't let you pack your car with your stuff, since there is a weight limitation and liability concerns.

I've also gone to Uhaul.com to see how much it'd cost to get one of those small vans w/ a flatbed car carrier. That was about 1900 total. On top of that, the incurring fuel costs (which is obviously high) would be something like another 400(?) or so. Plus, driving cross country alone, you'd need to stop and sleep a couple times, so 2x $100 for a hotel room. Doesn't seem cost effective that way.

I'm helping my friend move his car from Syracuse to S.F. in June. I get to see a Rochester Red Wings AAA game, Chicago, Rushmore, Yellowstone, Craters of the Moon, then bail on his ass and fly from Twin Falls, ID to Vegas... and I don't even have to pay for the trip!

Danny, drive cross country. It's fun, and you might even lose your virginity.

Lots of replies by people moving across the country.

I'm moving half-way across the country, but I've got to move TWO cars--so that's like one cross-country drive.

Actually, the kids will be in the back seat for one leg. So that will make it fell like NINE cross-country drives.

BTW, who ever guessed that they would spend $400 on fuel--guess again.

I drove a big U-Haul, towing a car, from Vegas to Tunica in 2000 (long before $2/gal seemed possible). I guessed at the time that I might spend $200 on fuel.

$200 didn't get me across ARIZONA. I think I spent about $500 on fuel, to go 1500 miles.

My trip is 2800 miles (actual road, not the way the bird flies). My little Japanese car gets 34+ mpg on the highway...thats 82 or so gallons...we'll say 100 just to go crazy.
100*2.2 for gas = $220 in fuel.

I will not be towing jacksh.t, therefore my fuel economy will not suck balls /images/graemlins/smile.gif
