New to SH, how's this overall?

BB seemed poor. Loose passive was my initial read here although I'd only been at the table for a couple of orbits.

If I bet can I fold to a raise?

Bet for sure. If you're confident in your read, fold to a raise, although against an unknown I probably spew chips and look him up.

Bet for sure.

What exactly is he calling with that I beat? Small pairs I suppose but shouldn't I win more than 50% of the time he calls here, significantly more than 50% in this case since the chance of a CR is higher than usual and I'm paying him off (yeah I would have paid him too).

If I make 2 columns, 1 of hands that call and lose and 1 of hands that call and beat me, I think the latter is a longer list. Maybe I'm wrong though because I'm not sure how low SH guys will call with here. Is it possible he calls with K or Q high here?

the river improved your hand if anything.. bet and fold to a raise.

At $0.50/$1 with a read that he is loose/passive? A whole lot. Take your pick from: a 7, a worse J, a T, a low pp, etc.

I bet this against a typical loose-passive at $10/$20. At $0.50/$1.00 seems a no-brainer.

I think you have to value bet this river, fold to a passive player's raise. But what about preflop? Stealing from UTG+1 doesn't work very often.

I fold preflop

I bet the river

worse hands that call = Any Ten, and any 7, and a bunch of crappy little pocket pairs. This is .5/1, I expect to win well over 50% of the time here when called

this is a pretty easy bet actually. the A actually improves your chances of winning by a wide margin because mathematically speaking his chances of holding an A are slimmer and the fact that he's been calling the whole way gives you no reason to believe you were ever behind at any point to begin with.

if you bet it, they will come.

There is no need to play this hand from this position for a raise. You are going to get into marginal situation way to often for someone starting out playing shorthand. Shoot for no higher than 21% VP$IP to start out.
