I am trying to decide where to go to grad school and if there is anyway I could do it in a city with a poker room I would love to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

L.A. and San Francisco aren't really college towns, but....

Try UNLV. The Strip is about 1.5 miles away.

BTW, that's not very good criteria for choosing a school.

I don't know....I long ago decided I wouldn't live in a town without wagering on horses.

Silly maybe, but hey, we've all gotta have priorities.

Hi Mob,
Las Vegas, Tunica, Foxwoods, L.A., San Fran, Possibly San Diego (New Harrah's), Riverboats all around Indiana (Ohio River, Chicago), etc. etc.

But really dude. Maximize the EV on you college dollars. Go to the biggest name, most connected school you can afford and get into.

Trust me, after years in Corp. Usa., better to start off as a Junior Exec and shoot for Corporate than to go to "No-name near Poker" U.

Better yet, get an education in something that leads to being an independant professional, or something you really love.

In corp. USA you have to put up with everyone else who is there. As an independant Prof. you can have high $$$ and be the CEO of your own little operation.

A doctor with a private practise for example. I'll let you figure the others out.

Granted most such Independant Prof. type things take the full 7-10 years of school. But when you get older and want more say in your life, you'll be glad you stuck it out.

Take it from someone who dropped out of Law School and has been somewhat regretting it ever since.

If you go the corp. route. Try to figure out where the high level folks are recruited from. Otherwise you'll be a grunt. I promise.

The top is an insiders club. With a few exceptions of course.

Suggestion. Ask Mckinsey consulting and Boston Consulting where they get thier recruits from.

You'll find it's Ivy League dude. They go on campus to get them. Go to No-Name U and you'll be kissing the butts of the Ivy Leagers.

Don't believe me. Dig around and find out where big name CEO's like Lou Gerstner came from.

Granted, you could do Ivy league and still just be an accountant at Corp. HQ. There's always a political and $$$ element.

Hence I say be the independant Prof if you can. Yes it still has it's bad points, but if you don't want to be someone's servant (which is what anyone with a boss is) then consider you next moves carefully.

Sincerely,
Frank

P.S. Didn't some of the big names in the old school of Poker (Chip Reese, Doyle Brunson Era) just start games in the dorms? Might be more profitable than playing regulars!

I suggest the Boston area or UConn. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun Casinos are an hour from each.

That's close enough so you can play frequently, but far enough so you might not play every day.

Nevada has the advantage of legalized prostitution. This could be a leak if you are a winning player. Or it could be a source of income if you are a loser.

Thanks guys. I live in Boston now, but am ready for a change. I am not basing my decision on where to go on the proximity to a card room, but if I could be near one then great.

Well I am biased to San Diego just cause I love the place but it is also great for cardrooms. Besides being just over an hour from all the major rooms in LA (Hollywood Park, Bicycle, Hustler, etc) it also has some great local rooms (Oceans 11, Sycuan, Viejas). UCSD is nothing to shake a stick at and SDSU is even good for some graduate work (mostly Business).

I have visited San Diego and it is a great city. Hard to beat.

mob,

Detroit has a downtown cardroom that is accesible if you don't have a problem with getting a concealed weapons permit.

However, there is no good school in the area. Michigan is 45 minutes away. And if you don't have a car, you can't make it here. Ford runs this place, and we've got no public transportation.

By the way, that was a joke about concealed weapons. Greektown Casino is actually in one of the nicer areas of town. You can probably get by with a knife between the casino and the parking lot.

The University of Texas is located in Austin, TX. It's a pretty good school in many fields.

Their link is:

Austin just opened up a poker club. The link is:

There are various home games in town. I play with my buddies for low stakes on a regular (weekly) basis.

I've lived here for about ten years. It's a great town for a student (both undergrad and graduate).

Good luck with everything.

if you can get into stanford or even closeby schools you are all set. the campus at stanford is wonderful and the town area is great. the golf course there is one of the best i have ever played. best poker nearby in the world and the best school and weather.
next choice is near your home. other areas(outside of cal.) you have to sit in cigarette smoke either in the cardroom or nearby.

Arizona State has a great business school, awesome weather, and is 5 minutes from the best middle limit games in the country (Casino Arizona).

Hey, Ray,

Come by Stanford and I'll get you on the course. I'm a grad student here, BTW, and I agree with what you said. Berkely is also a top-notch school in most things (in sciences, it's tough to beat).

Go to Philadelphia,Pa. Ivy League school top reputation and the Taj is only 1 hour away. However, you will make more money from your education at Penn then playing with the grunts At the Taj.

The only problem with Penn is that it is surrounded by a ghetto and getting shot kind of sucks...
