View Full Version : For those who question the games at the Taj...Trip report..

I had made plans with poster Avid to meet up at the Taj around 5:00 am Saturday morning. We would play in the ring games until the 11:00 am weekly $100+$20 no limit tournament.

I did not arrive at the poker room until 9:00 am. I needed to sleep in. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I met up with Avid, registered for the tournament and then I looked for a game to jump into. Avid had an open seat in his $20 game, however thats higher then I want to play.

I jumped into a $1-$2 no limit max $300 buy in game and decided to play in that game until the tournament started. I walked by the table and it had a few empty seats. I asked the dealer if they had a list, and one of the players invited me to sit with the..." we need new blood"...Rounders type quote. I found it amusing. It came from a player who Fred G Sanford and I refer to as the standard issue. He had on the sunglasses, the baseball cap and the hooded sweatshirt.

The game featured players still playing from the previous night. Nobody had a tremendous stack and nobody played particularly well.

The table had one really bad player who played all his hands to the river then rebought up to $300 if he lost.

I flopped the nut flush against this player and extracted the max ($220) from him.

In another hand he tried to check raise me on the turn and on the river. He turned trip Queens against my AK on a final board of KQ7Q4.

I picked up Kings and a player reraised me his entire stack of 270 with 77. I flopped a set and never looked back.

I left the table at 10:45 up $500. I had the tournament paid for and I picked up $400. Nice way to start the day.

I played the tournament and had to fold most of the hands I open raised with.

I lost a raise with AK against JJ and became crippled. I got blinded out during the fourth level. Thats poker /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I jumped right into a brand new $10-$20 game at noon. They started the game as a must move table, however it turned into a main game as the day progressed.

The game had some really bad players. Poster Poker237 jumped into the game around 1:00 pm. He sat to my left and we got to chat a bit. We both agreed with Jeffage, the Taj has better games then the Borgata. Players did not mind calling raises and would call down with any piece of the flop. These players only raised or reraised with the goods. These players played loose passive, most of the players at the Borgata play tight passive. I prefer loose passive games.

I got to play with AC legend Tiger123. I saw him fold AQ face up on the turn to a board of QdQx4d9d . He bet, a straight forward player raised him and he folded face up. She showed down the AdJd. Bad laydown there Tiger, bad laydown /images/graemlins/confused.gif Tiger sat in the 10 seat, I sat in the 1 seat and Poker237 sat in the 2 seat.

I left the table and the room at 4:30 up 25 big bets in the $10 game.

Although the Taj poker room looks antiquated and the chips have a coating of filth, I recommend this room in terms of game selection over the Borgata.

The bad players and the good games will overcome the atmosphere and decor in my game selection.

I played with Tiger in the Borg 6/12 on my first trip to AC. What an intro to a new cardroom. He limp reraised with KJo, and turned trip jacks to crack my aces. The other thing he loves to talk about is how he helped write the rulebook at six hundred cardrooms.

I would've loved to have seen him get tossed from the Borg for list jumping a couple weeks/months back.

Previously the Taj 5/10 (and 10/20?) was described as
a rock garden, so have been playing the 6/12 at the Borg
.... apparently that's changed?

(besides, I can't get a room at the poker rate at the Taj and always can at the Borg)

I have only played in the 5/10 once. It was no rock garden, however I can see how people can experience that is so since the game is played with all red chips.

The 10/20 was a donktastic parade of bad bets. Loose passive idiots who don't feel worthy enough to hang out at the Borg fill that game, its g00t.

On a related note, the texture of any game as well as any room changes day to day, month to month, year to year. It makes sense why the better players have gravitated to the Borg, hence why it also makes sense to spend time at the other rooms around AC.

The Taj was only spreading a 1/2 and 2/5 on Saturday.

As Mike stated, I agree with him. The game in the afternoon was one of the better games I can remember in a long time. There was usually 5-6 on every flop, and if they had it, they bet. It was loose and passive. Unforunately, I was going card dead, so I went to Borgata for dinner, and then I was rivered left and right in a short game with drunk people who didn't know how to play and left down for the evening. I will play in the Taj more.

A woman in seat 6 or 7 got into a little argument with Tiger123, but nothing too heated.

FYP bro.

Oh yeah, one other note, beating up on Tiger is wicked fun.

Pulled a bunky on him one night where I open raised 67s in the CO he three bet from the SB and we went HU. I flopped the nut straight and went three bets with him on the flop, blank hits the turn and we go 5 bets, river 2 bets and I show down my cheese, he flopped a set of 8's. He proceeded to go off. The man can lay a beat and berate fish, but sure as heck can't take one.

Funny how he declined to go play me in 20-40 though. He kept pretty much quiet after that as I assulted his blind unmercifully.

Sorry I missed the gathering...gave my family some face time, it being Mother's Day and all /images/graemlins/cool.gif. I'll probably be down over Memorial Day Weekend. I agree with you about the Taj, though I wish they could get some bigger games going. They used to spread 50-100 24-7, now they can't get it going on Saturday nights. But the 20 is wicked good, and I'm really getting into the 30 stud game there (though I'm not sure if I play it that well, we'll see). Borg 40-80 is a great game though. 20-40 was good also the last time I played it there (last Sunday). I think both rooms have plusses and minuses and it's to the player's advantage not to become married to a room b/c conditions change.

I couldn't help myself. The odd thing is that he told me how to find that page when I first played with him. I tried to be a nice guy and chat him up since the tourists at the table did not care about RGP or his touring of the tables... but after the 3rd time he gave me a 2 minute staredown when I raised his blind... I was like, "c'mon dude... the rest of the zoo wants to play too." The table had a good laugh...he did not.

He ended up burning through about a rack trying to "outplay" some young rich kids who had no idea that folding was part of the rules and then throwing them snide remarks. Nice hands sir. I like my way of keeping the game loose and fun better...

When the Borgata first opened they spread a $15 game. The game did not go strong because players preferred the $20 game.

I asked recently if they could start a $15 list, and the brush told me the Borgata cannot run that game. I don't know if thats the patronizing answer.

I do know that the Borgata cannot spread $5-$10 hold em. One night a few of us wanted to play a 5-10 3 way game and they would not spread it.

I asked Stan the Poker room manager about this some time ago. His answer was that you have to cut off the game selection somewhere as each game requires (per AC gaming) a procedure book, placards, and other items that the players don't see.

In the begining there was some latitued as to spreads until the Borg established their "spreads" 3/6 10/20 and 20/40 were more popular than 5/10 and 15/30 so the decision was made to go 10/20 20/40 40/80 80/160.
