View Full Version : To The Noobs....Optimum Bubble Play

Degen
05-07-2005, 09:29 PM
I've seen a lot of questions posted about how to play the bubble and a lot of noobs playing it poorly, and as i estimate my bubble/ITM play accounts for AT LEAST 75% of my ROI, i thought i'd post a pretty 'text book' bubble, IMO.

Feedback/criticism/questions welcome.

Well done. I like that you are aggressive but not over-aggressive, picking your spots and even folding several times from the SB when it was folded to you. I think pushing every single time it is folded to you is excessive, though many advocate it.

Very well played levoo beat me to it the only hand I had a question about was the 72 from the small blind every thing else looked great. Maybe im off but with the 72 shouldnt you push if you are going to do something there? or am I way off?

ya good point

i had been raising his blind and each time it folded instantly....refer to scuba's 'internet tells' thread...means he has his CHECK/FOLD button on...so i don't need to risk it all to steal from him, a min raise will take it down if he has it checked...he didn't this time. I also often min-raise the blinds if i have AA or KK, especially when i have been incessantly pushing, to invite them to take a stand and reraise.

I min bet that flop for value, and probably not putting any more chips in if called and i didn't improve.

Much easier done when opponents will fold. I guarantee that at $5, $11, $22 where most of the people here play you would have been called by your 3rd push.

And at the 55's too, but for a different reason, they are good players and catch on.

The 33's are a strange land and i've taken journeys higher and i'm sure i will again but you just can't beat the bubble play at the 33's. They're all looking for 3rd.

This was far from a lucky shot, it happens constantly where i'm 4/5 handed and non-chip leader and i have a HUGE stack once ITM...i also get a lot of 4ths /images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The 72 hand aside the only one I am curious about/would play differently is the 10 7o hand where the sb limps in and UTG will be all in blind the next hand and you checked. Why didn't you shove all in? I think his range of calling hands would have to be extremely tight under the cirumstances. 90+ percent of the time you take that pot down.

Good play (except for the oft mentioned 72o hand) but you have to admit, you had a pretty good run of cards too.

You had a lot of AJ, KT type hands and its easy to be aggressive when you get hands that are likely the best at the table. I don't really remember any spots where you had any particularly close pushes (I guess you did move in with K5o and Q2s, but those seem so big compared to most of my bubble hands ). /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I think the T7o from the BB was by far the easiest push.
(unless he never limped before so you thought he was trapping with AA or something)

but what do i know i play the 20s

This was for the new guys.

I wanted them to see that you do push with Q2s on the bubble and raise and bet the flop w/ a duece...AND fold to an all-in w/ A3s to preserve your FE...and call all-ins with trash if they pot is laying you the right odds...and keep the small stacks alive so you can keep the bubble going and steal more blinds (notice besides the 72o hand i didn't move in on the BB much from the SB but i kept raising when i was the button). He was the short stack much of the tourney, i didn't want to bust him.

Very nice post, Andre. I just think that most n00bs aren't playing the $55s, so my questions are:

Would you have pushed the K/images/graemlins/heart.gif T/images/graemlins/heart.gif in a $10+1? Why?

My guess is you can answer this yourself. Next time it's 4 handed, analyze what YOU are thinking about. I'll guess you're feeling real tight. That you want to make the money, 'cos your so close. You don't want to make a foolish mistake, yada yada yada.

This psychological effect is likely very strong at the lower levels, just as much or more so than the higher levels. This only occurs 4 handed on the lower levels, where I think this expands to 5 handed as you move up.

I don't find that gives out the kind of information you might think it does. Anyone would push and definitely want a call with those hands, so pushing them and showing you'll do so doesn't establish credibility on any of the rest of your hands.

When I see someone flashing their AA or KK after a preflop push, I think, "Of course. What else?" It doesn't do a thing to make me think anything about the rest of their pushes. Quite the contrary, I wonder if they think the other players are stupid when flashing, or if they're showing off. Because only a fool would think that a guy flashing his AA or KK means that you'd better watch out, because when he pushes he's got great cards.

Like noted, anyone would push with AA or KK, so I'm not forming an opinion on their pushing that would give them any greater fold equity next time. Maybe less actually, because besides a sort of gleeful or perhaps just borderline retarded braggging, the main purpose of flashing a monster is explicitly to try to steal with crap later.

If you're thinking the next level up and intend to only push monsters after flashing monsters, that's one thing, but in SNG's we usually don't have the luxury of waiting for monsters anyway. I'm figuring the guy flashing AA or KK after an uncalled push is hoping to start stealing with subpar hands really soon.

I agree with most of what you said Blarg, with regard to poker in general and higher level thinking etc.

But this is not the WSOP and these guys are not rocket scientists when it comes to making decisions at the felt. As a rule, I never show my cards, ever. But i can see what he means by this and i do think, with the average bubble 33 player that this could be effective.

I've played very few 22's as well, so i'm not fully qualified to respond to that. I play at the 33 and 55 levels.

I think what scuba said is probably pretty accurate with regard to people wanting to get in the money. your average Joe Gambler playing the 22's probably has less than $200 in his PartyPoker account, so that $40 would account for over 20% of his current bankroll...meaning that it would mean a lot to him.

Anytime you have a situation where your opponents are trying to get in the money as thier goal, they are going to be playing too tight and you can take advantage of this by stealing their blinds.

As an aside to the talk about showing AA/KK. I love when people show their BB when its folded to them. Usually they do this when they either have nothing (show a 72 or a 94) or they had a hand they would call with.

The first mans nothing, the second can be nice information. For example, I was in a SNG the other day wherethere was a shortstack UTG maybe 2BBs. The BB was the second biggest stack (I was a comfortable 3rd). It's folded to the SB (the big stack) who folds, BB shows A5o. Now this might mean nothing, but to me this means "good thing you didn't push cause I was calling" and thus "I have no clue about correct bubble play"

just wondering what you put him on to fold A3s to a smaller stack while you are the blind?

I don't know if he needs a premium hand, but probably needs more than he going to get the majority of the time.

On the other hand this seems like one of those ... do I really need to risk it type of hands. Losing this hand would be really bad for the Hero and winning doesn't really change much. I'd push with a lot of hands here maybe 70-80%, but not with total garbage like 94o.

I think you are probably giving a typical opponent too much credit here. Unless he has shown me a reason to think hes going to be stealing a lot I'm going to assume hes at least relatively tight.

Plus (and more importantly) this raise was from UTG/CO, not the button and hes not really all the desparate yet (he can go through the blinds and still have good FE), so this should tighten up yoru calling range a bit more.

Your considerations for +EV and -EV are not completely accurate IMO becaue they don't take into account my lost FE. My gap is rediculously out of control when i'm on the bubble simply because i know how much free money is posted each hand.

Even if i'm a slight fav here, big deal. If i lose i'm crippled. There is no way i'm a big favorite unless he happens to have a K3, Q3, J3 etc.

Hands he could have? QT, J9, A8, 44 etc etc. I'm not calling this if i can see his hand and i'm a 60% favorite to win the pot, because i'm probably a 50% favorite to win the whole thing at this point the way these guys play their blinds.

Ok well i got through reading the whole thing and the bubble was phenomenal, though a different kind of bubble than i was trying to show. He had a monster stack from the start and played it perfectly and nearly doubled his 4k just in blind steals.

Mine was an example of starting w/ equal stacks and taking advantage of everybody looking for the money.

But great HH nonetheless...put it back up or start a new post Usher, i'm sure people will have some stuff to say about it.
