View Full Version : Online Tells

I would like to know what everybody's experiences are with online tells. Here are a few which I find work.

Players who use the raise button before the action gets to them so that they raise instantaneously usually have strong hands.
Most opponents who “think” or wait a longer time than normal and then check are trying to suggest they have a decent hand and want you to check.
An opponent who has been the aggressor and then suddenly delays before betting usually has a strong hand.
An opponent who uses the auto check-fold button usually indicates weakness giving you a bluffing opportunity.

Do you agree with thes generalizations? Are there other tells I should be looking for?

regards, poohbear

"Players who use the raise button before the action gets to them so that they raise instantaneously usually have strong hands."

This I agree with. The rest can be played back at you. I know that you preferenced them with usually, but I think most of these tendencies are limit sensitive.

"Most opponents who “think” or wait a longer time than normal and then check are trying to suggest they have a decent hand and want you to check."

Yes, I rarely put much weight on this, but I'm very on edge when someone who pulls this stuff, suddenly quick-checks behind someone else, checking to the raiser.

"An opponent who has been the aggressor and then suddenly delays before betting usually has a strong hand."

If you really find someone with this pattern, make sure to call every once and awhile, to make sure it is still in effect.

"An opponent who uses the auto check-fold button usually indicates weakness giving you a bluffing opportunity."

Someone doing this against a BB, from the SB, can get stung. Most players notice when the button and the SB make plays at them alot, even when they have the auto check/fold button on.

Here's one to watch for:

Player calls pre-flop, not up front, then pauses on the flop until the audio cue would kick in then checks. They usually have completely missed the flop.....unless they are pulling their own stunt. hehe

Sorry pooh but I found this one statement of yours hilarious! An opponent who uses the auto check-fold button usually indicates weakness giving you a bluffing opportunity. Personally I click on auto check-fold when I have the nuts to throw them off guard. When you throw away that royal flush you really surprise them!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

i disagree with your second statement about waiting a long time then checking to show a decision of bet or check,,,,to entice you to check cause they are actually weak.

i think that in many online cases they are reading at another site, or playing two tables possibly, so would put little stock in this one.

"Players who use the raise button before the action gets to them so that they raise instantaneously usually have strong hands."

--- When running a bluff or semi-bluff I try to hit this button just before it is my turn. It seems to work.

"An opponent who uses the auto check-fold button usually indicates weakness giving you a bluffing opportunity."

---If there is a bet or raise they fold.
However, barring any action, if they check you can't know if they clicked "check/fold, in turn" or "check, in turn" - 2 actions with probable seperate meanings.
