Is it me, or do people who buy in short,

Like $40-$50 into the 2-4 game or $50-60 into the 3-6 game - can I just go ahead and label them a fish right away?

I was at a 5/10 LHE game once and a guy sat down w/ about $50 and destroyed the table.

I would say that was unusual though. I usually see people with short buy-ins as "trying to not lose too much".

I do it (15-20 BB) to make the fish think I'm a fish.

I assume they are until I see otherwise.

I have seen people buy in for $50 at 5/10s and $300 at 15/30s. I find it hard to believe that any decent player would do this. I'm more inclined to believe that they're under-rolled or the "I'm hoping to get lucky" type. I've also found that those kind of people are easier to push around (especially the 5 BB buyers). I think their goal is to play tight until they get dealt a set of monster hole cards and then get all their money in with that. This is just speculation and from my experience.

Invariably fish - with very few exceptions.

5BB buyins might be small enough to abuse actually, any of the math wizzes care to figure out if it is?

I'm pretty sure buying in for 10BB is worthless though.

A related concept is when someone buys in a 2/4 game for an odd amount such as $37.44, you can pretty much be sure that that's the last of it, and that when they tap out at this table, they are busted. The inference that they are probably terrible to wind up in such a spot is then the next logical step. I lock these assumptions in when they buy in for $37.44 and then post UTG rather than wait one hand.

Further to this, it is my opinion that these people may BS themselves into the notion that they are trying to make a comeback, but what is really happening is that they are looking for some closure for their currrent situation. (Because if they WERE serious about making a comeback, they would move down to 50c limit where they would have a rack or two to work with rather than a short buy-in). There will be some finality acheived when they do tap out, and in that respect, I see that these folks are seldom disappointed.

I use the short-buy in to sucker in fish to sit with low amounts and play HUs, once they sit and I know they are going to post, I reload to my amount I wish. They usually don't, or still suck.
