This morning I was listening to one of my favorites, "David Bowie" by Phish. While I do really like the last 5 minutes or so, they could close up shop at the 3 minute mark and I'd still think it's one of the greats.

It got me to thinking if there are any other tunes out there that are great or renowned simply by virtue of their beginning despite a lackluster finish. I'll throw out Beethoven's 5th just so it's not repeated a thousand times. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Foreplay/Long Time (Boston)

EDIT:

Every song from Asia.
Every song from Europe.

(not the continents)

They may not be renowned, but they're usually very front-heavy.

Wow, nice. FP/LT and CT were both two I was thinking of when I opened this.

For strong starts w/ weak finishes I say "Tweezer". "David Bowie" and "Dinner and a Movie" I could skip all together.

CT wins this hands down. The song should stop after the first 33 seconds. I think I first heard the lead-in watching a skateboarding vid with a friend back in the day. When I heard the full song my jaw dropped when it changed, and I just kind of shook my head...great solo though...

Weakest: Death Cab- New Year.... "So this is the new year, and I dont feel any different."

God I love that Cd but that opening line of the whole disk makes me puke.

Ill get back with the best opening line.

I still like the end but I think the epitome of what you are talking about is Layla by Derrick and the Dominoes.

The ending is very good of course but that is a good example.
