View Full Version : POLL: When do you start to lose sleep?

Everybody's had to have had a pretty lousy day or three. You get sucked out a few dozen times, lose a bunch of cash, and get so wound up you have a hard time getting to sleep. You curse at the screen (or across the table at your opponents) and maybe throw things.

How much of a loss would keep you up at night?

Wakko,

For a guy with 68 posts you sure do make some quality contributions to these forums.

Just don't ask me for poker advice. I am good at everything else.

My thresholds for cursing, throwing things, and not sleeping are very, very different.

I put $10k because I've never had trouble sleeping after a loss, but I've never lost $10k in a day, either.

uh? it's just poker... sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I have found that downswings are followed by some sort of upswing and sooner, more often than, later I've made back what I've lost and more.

btw, poker content does not belong in OOT.

edit: you poll should be based on BBs and not $

You're right. Now the findings will never be published in the New England Journal of Pokar.

yah, it's funny. i won $500 one friday night. $500 again on saturday. but then on sunday i lost $800 and felt a pit in my stomach going to bed that night.

i couldnt frame it in my mind that i was up $200 for the weekend. i just kept thinking about how i lost $800 in the blink of an eye.

I've lost $2500 in about 30 minutes on a blackjack table. I was cardcounting at the time, too. I've also made $2500 in 30 minutes on blackjack.

Not possible. Whatever the number is I would never allow it to happen.

Maybe if my account got hacked and emptied, because it would leave me with no income. Still, I think I could get back on my feet within a few months.

I dropped like 6 buy-ins over a couple day period and felt like the scum of the earth. couldn't sleep. Needless to say two weeks later I found a great table and had 7 buy-ins on that table alone.

I always sleep well after losing large sums of money or after just a much harder than normal nite's play-$amount doesnt matter.

It's the big winning nites that I'm all wound up. Usually after a horrid session I am so drained mentally that falling asleep isnt an issue.

I used to share a house with a couple pros in Ventnor -south of AC years back. One of the guys whenever he lost more than 2 days in a row-he'd sleep for like 16 hours-he would get clincally depressed from just normal swings.I thing you will find that most pros react to loses by just getting depressed-that means sleeping too much or for too long. I have smaller swings online now. But when I played B&M and played $15-30 regularly if I had a bad nite like a 50-70bb loser I would sleep like a baby.

last weekend i lost 2000 at 40-80 and didn't care

2 days ago i lost 1700 at party 15 and didn't care

i mainly don't care cuz i am confident that i am a winning player and usually get excited that an upswing is coming

like today, i won 2300

btw this should be in psycology forum

I've dropped a couple of dimes in a day and slept fine that night...if you can't deal with the swings, you shouldn't be gambling. (In the past I have bet $300 a hand or more on blackjack to clear a bonus really fast and unloaded a dime or 2 that way, whatever...in the end the bonus will be profitable) /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Its usually not the amount. I know when playing a big multi and I lose a gigantic pot (which ends up costing you the lead and probably the final table winnings) say you lose to an amazing 2 outer. Yeah, that will make lose sleep. Esp if you see a guy that took you out on that huge pot on that bad beat, and I look at the final scores and he goes on to win some of the top prize tournament money.
