Hello,
I wanted to make the poker community aware of a fellow player in need. My best friend Evan Gettert of Iowa was diagnosed a year ago with brain cancer. It was his last wish to play in the WSOP this year, and we created a website to raise donations. Recently, his health has taken a turn for the worse and it looks like he won't be able to make the tournament. If so, all donations will go to his 2 year old son, Owen. Evan is a great guy and awesome poker player. Please check out his site, VegasDream.org (http://wwww.vegasdream.org), donate if you can, and pass it along.
My sincere thanks,
Andy from Iowa

Link doesn't work, you have an extra "w" in the link.

Edit to say best wishes to the entire family.

Very disappointed that this wasn't a gimmick account to help Evan get taller.

To the OP, wish him the best of luck (if this is legit).

Why do I suspect this is a fraud?

Am I cynical... or do I have common sense?

If it is a fraud it involves one hella special effects element as there is a picture of Evan and his fresh brain biopsy sutures on the site. Somebody has some mad Photoshop skills to make that look as real as it does.

Once this is over, he really should give the help4evan account to sfer or something, just so that it can be used properly.

wont be so cruel as beerfund, but ive got to agree w/ him.

how about raising $10k for a trustfund for the child instead of, in all likelihood, throwing it away when the family isn't well off now and needs money? or raising $3k so the family can take a wonderful vacation this year?

This reminds me of the line from Rounders, "How do I know you're not playing me."

Here's where the odor is a little strange to me. Evan is dying and wants to "honor his son". Does he do this by asking for donations for his son? No. He honors his son by Begging for Money to Gamble With. Sniff.

how sad is it? sadder than dying at 25 w/ a 2 year old son? seriously, your compassion & basic humanity needs some work...

I don't know seems kind of off to me as well. He has terminal cancer and a 2-year old son. He is having a fundraiser so he can play poker?

At the ver least his priorities are a little skewed, which might be understandable because of the stressful situation.

I would be more inclined to donate something to his son's future well being. So while "pathetic" is probably insensitive, it also is not too far off.

If he truly is a very strong hold'em player, like he tries to make himself sound like, 10K is easy enough to make online. He shouldnt need anyone to donate.

It may be possibnle, but if I was dying I wouldn't want to grind out 10k.

While I think this is not an appropriate place to seek out donations or cyberbeg, and have no idea if this is legit, this man's purported last wish is entirely reasonable. Sometimes, when gravely ill, it helps to seek out something normal, and unrelated to illness. The desire to do something that you expected to be able to do one day, but don't have enough time becomes potent.

I'll not be donating, but understand the wish entirely, as a psychologist, a poker player, and a cancer survivor.
