Hey all,

Just wandering what kind of swings other people are having. Tonight I've been extremely unlucky and I've lost a lot of money in a short period of time. I was playing $5/$10 and lost over $500.00 in an hour playing on 3 tables. Does this seem normal?

Here is a sample of some of the hands I lost with.

AA on a flop of [ 6c, 7h, Jd ] $75
AJ on a flop of [ 3d, 7h, Ah ] $45
KQ on a flop of [ 2d, Kc, Qd ] $30
99 on a flop of [ 9h, Ts, 4c ] $45
99 on a flop of [ 4s, 9h, 6d ] $60
JT on a flop of [ Ts, 4d, 9s ] $50

Thanks,
Tom

I got killed last night. AA lost to A2s (backdoor flush) and then 89o (runner runner trips after a 3-high flop). KK lost to A6o (two of them, actually--they both coldcalled preflop) and 55 (backdoor straight on A-high flop). In all, I dropped about 40 BBs.

I started tonight off winning about 10 of them back, then got slaughtered by bizarre hands again until I was down about 30 more BBs. Then I went on a tear to end the night +3.5.

Swings happen. 50 BBs in an hour is definitely possible while 3-tabling, and actually likely given a long enough time line. Just stay on your A game & the pots will start heading your way again soon.

Come on man, you've been here almost a year. You know better than this.

Sorry to hear it, get over it, we all go through it.

I was also 3-tabling last night and went on a 50 BB downswing. As long as you are looking at your hands, and see that you are getting sucked out, or at least playing the hands correctly, then you are fine. Swings happen, first time it happened to me, I freaked out too, but you'll get used to it. A couple big pots, and you'll be right back in it.

Yes I've been through swings before, but was just wondering if anyone else has lost 50 BB in an hour and how often. How about 80 BB in 3 hours? Again on 3 tables. Is that out of the ordinary?

Definitely pretty normal, I went through the same thing tonight (albeit at 2/4) where I couldn't win a big pot if my life depended on it. (mostly because everyone kept spiking their bizarre low sets on the river! 3 times in my first 120 hands this happened)

But, like Harvb said, keep plugging away and the odds will eventually put the money your way. Take a break maybe, that's what I'm going to do.

Good luck

Tuesday of last week, playing 5/10, I had a 90BB downswing in a few hours... brought it back up with a 70BB upswing later that evening. Followed it up on Wednesday with a 110BB downswing. Fun times. You'll pull out of it. Since Wednesday I'm up 190BB.

50 BB is nothing is a minor downswing. Yes they suck, but every player runs into them on a regular basis.

Yeah, I lost about 60-70 BB in a swing yesterday. Took me about 1.5 hours. I was three-tabling and won 3 pots in all. It seemed like I had AK/AKs every orbit, but either they didn't hit or got rivered. Didn't win won single pot with AK actually, which stinged pretty bad considering one of the flops were QJTos.

Two comments:

1) If $500 is "a lot of money" to you then you shouldn't be playing 5/10.

2) When I go on a downswing I take time to review my play and make sure that it actually is just "extremely unlucky". Sometimes it's not just luck.

Edit...also, this isn't unusual. I lost I think 32 BB's in 52 hands Sunday Morning. My XXXXing coffee wasn't even done yet. 50 BB's is no big deal.
