it looks to me like you didn't win enough money. raise it to $30 on the turn, and make a $35-40 value bet on the river.

i'd have raised the flop. you don't want to give QJ cheap cards.

I agree with swolfe. Even without a flush draw, there are tons of scare cards when you flop a straight. In this hand, any 6, 7, 8, 9, T, J, Q, or K makes your hand no longer the nuts. While some of these make the nut hand less likely than others, you still don't want to see any of them. I'd either lead or check/raise on the flop. Sets and two pair will probably give you some action as might higher straight draws. Taking your line on the flop, I'd definitely raise more on the turn and bet more on the river for value (I'd say raise to about $30 on the turn, then bet 1/2-2/3 pot on river).

I agree with both comments: First, you left too much money behind. If he was going to call the check raise, he would call a bigger one, as well. Second, your hand was too vulnerable to wait until the turn to check-raise, unless you know opponent is way too aggressive a bluffer (and you said you had no reads).

If you just change your hand to 89 with a rainbow flop of 67T, that makes all the difference -- there is no straight draw that you are afraid of. When your cards are closer to the small end of the straight, you can not afford to mess around this much.
