The Growth of pot limit and no limit games

At every place I play now pot and no limit games seem to be the flavour.

I really enjoy these forms of poker because expert players can really extract money quickly from weaker opponents.

With this in mind do you think that there will be a higher turnover of internet poker players as the growth in pot and no limit games continues? I tend to think this might be the case.

I am just thinking aloud on this one. I have no evidence that the turnover rate has been higher in recent months.

i say yes and no to this. a lot of internet players are social players (as social as the internet gets anyway) and are not their to make hords of money and are unwilling to take big losses. they are there to simply sit down and have an hour of poker fun with little risk and therfore little reward.
however i also think there are a lot of people there who believe they are good enough or those who are simply looking for a rush, and that rush is certainly much bigger in pot/no limit games compared to limit games.

i also unbeatability that many poor and average players will find in no/pot limit games will drive them back to the limits.

oops, hit continue instead of edit......the word "think" should be inserted between also and unbeatability.

Anyone who sticks to Limit poker is missing out and should at least try PL/NL. Whether they get busted or not depends on their ability to change their style of play. As for turnover rate, time will tell but I don't think it will make a big difference.

This has become a major concern for me very recently.

For a poker site the ideal situation would be for all the players to break even (except for the rake of course) at all times. This is why limit poker was even invented. The players stay longer at the tables and pay more in rake.

Well, PL and NL is very popular so of course the sites have to offer it.

So the sites say "Ok, but let's at least keep the limits low and we will tell our clients it's because of the risk of being cheated, not because we don't want them to lose their money as quickly."

Well, I met several of my clients (and potential clients) live at the Swedish championship of Texas Holdem last weekend. They said, "the limits are too low online so we don't play. Why can't you open up a Omaha PL 5/10. We'll play then."

The risk of being cheated at a higher limit table should not be greater. The risk of higher limit games is of course that we don't get our deposits as we should. However, people tend to be more willing to wire larger amounts of money than smaller.

So we opened up a Omaha PL 5/10. first night a guy won over $10G. I was silently praying that this wouldn't kill all action for a week. Tonite another full table is going.

So I tried to do what my clients wanted. Immediately I got some very good new clients who were willing to play online but usually didn't because nobody offered their game of choice.

Anyway, to answer your question: yes the risk for people being out of the loop for a while is greater but I would assume that if they want to play PL/NL because of the action or whatever, it's because they enjoy it and therefore will be back. If they don't enjoy the swings and can't master the game, I would say that the will venture back to the more "secure" environment of Limit poker.

however, why would this be any different than WSEX offering 200-400 tables?

people that can afford to play in a game like you have now, are not really typical online players.

sure, you may get a FOOL (like me) that will take a shot at the game, but i don't understand your concerns. if i take a shot and lose, it certainly won't eat up my online BR, and anyone that risks their entire online BR in a single game is not a long term player anyway.

the 1-2 or 3-6 HE crowd is not about to sit at this table IMO

Well, we started out a while ago having nice O PL 1/2 and 2/4 going. My concern was that when opening up a higher level we wouldnt be able to fill both or all three levels since our player base is still too small. Thus, players that are used to 1/2 would maybe venture in to 5/10 and lose their money more quickly than was good for them (and us).

After tonite, I can say that this wasn't the case. rahter, we had both OM PL 2/4 and 5/10 going. As well as HE PL and NL 2/4.

It's just my job to worry about things like this. What do pokerplayers like and how will they react? And I seem to be wrong all the time. lol.

Anyway, I feel things are going the right direction for us and we have now established a small grip of the Swedish market, been moving into Norway and now the Danes are signing up. In December I am going to the Casino-Ray tournament (www.casino.ray.fi) to start our Finnish network. We are currently testing Sökö (Canadian Stud or Scandinavian Stud also called) that they play a lot over there. The Finns also like Omaha.

I will get to you "over there" eventually but the working hours get all screwed up when dealing with American time zones.

the players, and BR required between 1-2PL and 5-10PL are worlds apart.

i'm glad that the big game is not affecting your smaller ones.

i personally appreciate your posts here stefan. they are well thought out, and i feel like i am talking with a freind rather than a nameless site operator.
