Anyone do it?

Is it beneficial to take classes rather than video or book instruction?

Any stories, good or bad, are welcome.

Classes are vastly better. Try to find the best instructor you can, as lots are not so good. Don't put any special store by doing it around crashing waves in purple satin or all that goofy stuff. Better to do it in some grimy dump, if it's the real stuff.

Mostly you will find Yang style, which is a very large-motion, expansive style, but the original, more vigorous style and the one that made its name as a fighting style is the Chen style, which actually does lots of practice at normal and full speed, and the Wu style is a very good style with smaller, tighter movements and energy use than Yang. All styles can be great, if taught well.

Don't expect quick results.

It's really handy if someone attacks you in slow motion...

Yes, I have been attacked in slow motion several times in the past month and am seeking a way to fight back. I am tired of walking away in shame.
