1) How good do you have to be to join a rec league? I'd like to be with people around my own skill level(people who bowl 140-150, with an occasional 165).

2) What is the standard operating procedure for joining one?

3) Is it typically a lot cheaper per game to bowl in a league compared to doing it during open bowling?

4) Do they normally run by the season?

I'd like to join a couple summer leagues, and then maybe one during fall semester, and one in the spring.

I'm no expert, but from what I know:

1. doesn't matter

2. talk to the operator of your local bowling alley, he'll have all the info you need.

3. Yes

4. Usually yes

1) Different leagues will have different levels of competition. Mixed leagues are generally fun and about what you will need in terms of competition. You won't want something like a Men's league with a low handicap percentage to start out.

2) I recommend getting some friends and forming your own team. A league is a commitment, so you want to get people who will be reliable, and show up every week, and not quit in the middle. You can join as an individual looking for a team, but who knows who they will stick you with. Leagues usually start in the fall, and the summer. Sometimes they split the fall/winter season in half, and you can get in for the 2nd half, but at this time you should be looking at summer leagues. Summer leagues are usually 12-14 weeks, so it's less of a commitment than a 36 week fall league (or an 18 week split season league). Your bowling center should have a list of leagues forming, and they will have preliminary meetings where you sign up.

3) Your league dues will have a lineage portion and a prize fund portion, as well as a small amount for the league secretary and treasurer. Usually the lineage will not be any less than the regular rates. The prize fund portion can vary widely from league to league.

4) see above

I'm not going to read all the responses so I apologize if this has already been said. Anyway, find a find a local pro to give you a few lessons. I had two sessions when I was twelve and with outdated equipment and years going by without practice I can almost guarantee a 600 series. It has to be the easiest sport in the world to become competitve in with a little basic fundamental instuction.

How many bowling lessons should I need?

How much would you estimate the cost per lesson to be?

TIA.

I think I could probably(just a guess), get 4 1-hour lessons from a local pro for that price, instead of just one.

And I'd absorb more from 4 one-hour lessons than from one long session.

Wow.

I'm going to sound like a bowling noob now, but so be it.

What rings are those from? Are they PBA championship rings(is there such a thing)? They look impressive.

And Rockland is only 2 hours 47 minutes away from my house(141.4 miles). I checked.

edit: They look more like perfect score rings. From ABC maybe? Are you a well known pro?

siccjay

No 300?

PS. I have more rings than you.
