I really, really like watches. I am too poor to have any nice ones, but that doesn't stop me from preparing for the future. Maybe when I actually decide to learn how to play poker, I will be able to buy myself a few.

Anyway, what do you think are some sweet watches?

One I just saw recently that really caught my eye was the Louis Vuitton Speedy DuoJet.

Oh, and watches are really manly to talk about. Unlike pants.

this is a good post. I've also been interested in purchasing a nice wristwatch...

I like what I see from Tag Heuer, does anybody have one that could comment on it?

Also, Nixon makes some incredible watches for the price (sub $200) and for their demographic (young men).

I have a Tag Heuer 2000 Chronograph. I don't usually wear a watch but it feels really heavy so I only use it for diving. If you are used to a watch it might not be so bad. Movado with a leather (lizard maybe?) band for "dress-up" since it is comfortable, I can't tell time on it for [censored] though.

The DuoJet looks cool but I can't see having one unless you travel between two zones frequently. Otherwise, I think I'd end up being angry when last call comes an hour early.

I swear I just saw a thread recently with some serious bling but I can't find it. I like this one a lot:

Watches are one of the many things I really like, and wish I could buy more of (pens being the oddest). A really nice watch would be awesome, but I lose things too much right now to warrant such a purchase. Does anyone else hate leather bands though? I can't stand them.

TStoneMBD

leather bands are a joke. titanium, stainless, gold and plastic are the only acceptable bands.

I have two Tags (Series 1500 and Kirium Chronometer). I love them and they've held up well. I love the look of them and I don't mind the heft. I've been very happy with mine. I've had the 1500 for about 10 years and the Kirium for 6. The Kirium needs some servicing (it's an "automatic chronometer", ie. no battery, and it needs some servicing).

Most "real" watch (horologists) people don't like Tags (or Rolexes for that matter), but they're more concerned about the movements and stuff like that. Tag doesn't build their own movements IIRC. Rolex does, but there are better ones out there and they figure that if you're paying $5K+ for a watch, you may as well get the best.

Breitling is an incredible watch too. If I had the cash to spend on a 5K+ watch, that's what I'd get.

I have a Citizen. Nothing fancy, but they make a couple of lines of watches not generally available outside of Japan. This watch (http://world.altavista.com/babelfish/trurl_pagecontent?lp=ja_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww. watch-tanaka.com%2fcitizen%2fEBS74-1941%2f) caught my eye on a business trip last year, and what really sets it apart is accuracy - it's rated to within +/-10 seconds per year; most watches are accurate to +/-15 seconds per month. They make an even more accurate line, rated to +/-5 seconds per year but I didn't like those quite as much. After just about one year my watch is still within 3 seconds of the exact time. Plus, I can adjust the hour hand independantly of the minutes which is very handy when travelling, and the perpetual calendar means I don't need to mess with changing the dates, at least not until 2100.

Ug, don't get a watch by a luxury retailer, you're just paying for a name, but it's not a sweet watch. The good ones in this thread so far IMO are the Rolex, Dave's watch and the Patek.

I would look at Rolex--always a classic and classy, Breitling (sp?)--these are cool and a good guy's guy watch, although from what I understand these are now mass produced and really no different (craftsmanship-wise) than say, a Tag Heuer. If you want something gaudy, I think the Jacob watches are still pretty hot, although there, you're also paying for the name and the stones.

Check out WEMPE (http://www.wempe.com) for some ideas

But if you want the nuts, pay Franck (http://www.franckmullerusa.com/) a visit. I will be one day soon, hopefully.

The Nixon watch with a wood band is sweet. Wow. I wonder how heavy / comfortable is.

I wear a pretty standard looking blue-faced fossil with a metal band. Can't find a picture because it's several years old and the new models are different, but you have all probably seen something similar. Fossils are pretty nice looking and comfortable for their price (65-75 bucks).

I have a bulova millenia motion quartz I bought about 5 years ago.

Great watch, for around $500 in a watch shop...you can get one online for quite a bit less though. I like that it is self-winding, so no need for replacing batteries and all that crap.

this is mine. recently purchased. i was informed by the jeweler that a large portion of the upscale type watches are owned by the same conglomerate (think GM or Daimler/Chrysler). point being that there is no real difference in quality. only thing that is important is the type of movement and features you prefer.

anyone have conforming or contradicting knowledge?

Vintage watches are the best. You can get a very unique watch that NOBODY has seen before, and the quality of a top-notch watch is unmatched. I have a 50 year old Rolex, and it's as good as new. People always comment on it. I also like the old watches from Longines, Patek, Omega, Bulova, and several others.

Well, like I said I don't like watches, but even then I would just feel like too much of a pompus ass to wear that stuff. Not to mention the thing would be too confusing for someone like me. "Is it 6:47 or 5:38? I can't tell" and then I'd just stare at my watch for a while and scratch my head like a monkey.

EDIT: I don't own any of these watches, but I hope to someday. I did have a couple 30's Hamiltons, and I agree with the Sucker - vintage watches are the way to go for something classy and unique. Hamilton and Gruens are available super cheap.

Good call on the Jaeger - I love the Reverso. Beautiful watch. I may get one soon.

An outstanding watch you can get for a good price is a Gruen Curvex. Love it, and cheap for what you get.

It should be noted that several watches made today actually have lower quality than those made in years past. This isn't true for the top brands (Rolex, Patek, Jaeger, etc), which are largely the same, but some you'd be quite surprised about.

If you buy a vintage watch, I'd buy from a good dealer that you can trust. I like the Second Time Around in LA the best. They are very knowledgeable, the watchmaker is excellent, they service the watches for NO PROFIT, all watches have a 1-yr warranty and are fully serviced before you buy. Most importantly, all of their stuff is genuine. Their prices are fair, and you have some haggle room on the more expensive pieces. The quality is top-notch, though. The first watch I bought from them I went down there to check it out. Now, I'd be comfortable buying a 10K watch from them over the net.

I like the gold one with the roman numbers.

Most watches I see today are really amazingly gaudy. Lots of them have those fake diving timer rings on the outside that don't even move -- ridiculous. I can look through case after case of watches and not see any that look like an adult would wear them. Many are also excessively busy without providing any real value to counter the visual distraction and lack of legibility all their fussy show-off features ensure. Just a lot of bad taste and poor design.

Gisbert Joseph is a great vintage dealer:
joseph-watches.com
I got a 50s era Zenith (on ebay) (when Rolex wants a real movement, they get it from Zenith). just a few hundred bucks. if you want something new, go swiss and mechanical. I like some of Gerald Genta's designs (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31387&item=4990205 277&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) or this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31387&item=4989207 621&rd=1) (the jump hour, retrograde minutes), and if you want something with a little more testosterone try Girard (http://www.girard-perregaux.com/e/) Perregaux. If you want to keep it under a grand, there are some swiss makes that are supposed to be good I've heard: Oris, Mont Blanc, a couple others I forgot. of course if you've made it big, patek phillipe is de rigeur. lange und soehne is a german reentry into the top market, but I don't find their design appealing. (plus I don't have near that much to spend.) also, when you're looking for vintage dealers, or service in particular, make sure you are dealing with a swiss certified master watch technician. I took my zenith to zeitgeist in SF (now closed) to be inspected and cleaned. (it was mint, unworn, so didn't need much.) it was a neat little shop with a nice selection of watches inside. a few months later the main spring broke. zeitgeist was gone. I went to that expensive jewelry store with watches in union square. they couldn't help be but sent me to a guy upstairs in the same building. there were several watch makers in there. my guy had the german accent and all. when he tested the watch for accuracy he was shocked when I told him that it had been serviced, and expressed total condemnation for whoever claimed to have done it.

Being a WIS (Watch Idiot Savant) myself, I can highly recommend TimeZone (http://timezone.com) as a resource for watch information, pictures, and second-hand pricing.

I currently have ten or so watches, five that I would consider fine timepieces. Recently my Blancpain 2100 has been getting the most wrist time.

I agree with the earlier recommendation to look into vintage watches. These are an inexpensive way to get into automatic/manual watches and learn to appreciate their mechanisms. Ebay is actually a reasonable source of vintage Omegas.
