"The Angels' bullpen has allowed only four earned runs in its last 39 2-3 innings."

Bullpen is the most underrated weapon in baseball.

Discuss.

Those 39 2/3 innings were in April, right?

That's awesome but I do not think the importance of a bullpen is underrated at all. If anything it is overrated in recent years.

Their pen was lights out in October 2002, look where that got them. It definitely was not their starting pitching.

FWIW their pen is better this year than it was then.

The 2002 Angels had pretty damned good starting pitching.

Jarrod Washburn, 206 IP, 3.16 ERA
Kevin Appier, 188.3 IP, 3.92 ERA
Ramon Ortiz, 217.3 IP, 3.77 ERA
John Lackey, 108.3 IP, 3.66 ERA

I concede the Angels' bullpen is better so far than Oakland's (though very close), but an exceptional bullpen is so much more valuable with good starting pitching.

I was referring to their starters in the postseason. Point taken though.

Yea but Anaheim has a thing called offense. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

They're (Anaheim) definitely the team to beat in the west right now, no question about that. Oakland's offense has been awful, Texas has been Texas, and the Mariners are playing above their level.

Even the little girl on the ESPN radio commercial knows the important of middle relief or "setup men." Definately not overrated.
