Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, Charles Mingus, can't go wrong with Duke Ellington. DO you just want artists or Albums, cause some artists definetly have albums you wouldn't really need to hear

Atomic is a great modern jazz band from Sweden/norway. If you can find them, they rule the world.

People, nobody in this world that is coming to blues as a newbie is going to listen to more than 30 seconds of guys like Robert Johnson.

For blues, start with Stevie Ray Vaughan. Give old ZZ Top a listen for a great blues/rock mix. Go on to older Clapton, and then give that Clapton/BB King album a listen. Then give some of the older artists, like Muddy Waters and others listed, a spin.

And maybe this was just me, but if you know an instrument or begin learning one, your appreciation of both genres will increase tenfold.

Jazz can mean a lot of things, but what most people mean is a small combo from the 40's-60's. This will include a trumpet, sax, bass, drums, piano, and maybe a guitar. The music is generally improvised. The rhythm is generally supposed to swing. If you don't know what this means, I'm sorry.

Blues generally refers to the 12 bar blues, which feature standard chord changes and an AAB lyrical pattern like so:
A: I got up today, and went to the store
bar1: I bar2: I bar3: I bar4: I

A: I got up today, and went to the store

bar1: IV bar2: IV bar3: I bar4: I

B: I found out, they don't sell me beer no more

Bar1: V bar2: (IV) bar3: I bar4: I
