Besides poker I am not working so should have lots of free time. Here is what I have come up with so far as to how I will be spending my summer. I think I have been playing to much poker and want to expand my horizons a little. Any suggestions of things/hobbies I should look into?

1. gym 3-4 days a week, plus swimming
2. dance lessons -new
3. tennis lessons -continuation
4. golf lessons -continuation
5. guitar lessons -new
6. reading 1-2 books
7. volunteer 2-3 days a week tutoring or with disabled kids
8. online poker 15 hours + one overnight stay at the casino.
9. binge drinking average of 2 nights a week.

Dump the volunteer work.

Does the night at a casino count as a binge night? If so, bump up binges by one night. If not, bump by two nights.

no offense, but you sound like a nerdy kid trying to "break out of his shell"

in your freetime, just do what you want, i dont see the need to plan it all out.

The fact that he used the word "average" when discussing binge drinking just seals the deal.

I did that for the last 2 summers. Both ended up with me pretty much sitting on my ass. Seeing as there is a shitload of stuff I really wanna do, getting a basic plan together to set everything in motion is a good idea.

Looks like you're going to build a solid list of extracurriculars to put on a resume. I would smother under all that forced activity.

Suggestion: Read Think on These Things by J. Krishnamurti.

or

Triple your binge drinking. You'll need it.

This simply means you don't binge drink often enough.

What is the book about?

As for 2 nights, that is more than fine. Drinking isn't required to have a good time, or I can just drink a few and not get wasted.

I'd say this along with the one day recovery from the binge drinking pretty much seals the deal. But hey... it shouldn't really matter that much. Just relax...

That goes for this list too. There isn't enough relax and just letting things happen time. Those are the good times..

Some of my best nights I've had nothing planned and done more then any list could have hoped for.

I think it's a boon from a societal standpoint as long as he takes it seriously and works hard.

Two years ago I was planning to enter med school and I volunteered for a regional hospice. I am sure that I was a big help to them, even if my motives were insincere.

For the record, I decided to become a professional gambler instead of a doctor. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Your a judgemental prick. I enjoy volunteering, and do a lot of it outside of my resume. But I do have to keep in mind my resume and look out for that. The reason I decided I wanted to be a doctor in the first place was because I saw it as a well paying career that contributed positively to the world. If I didn't have to worry about my resume I would volunteer a lot less. Just because I do it for my application, doesn't make me a bad person, it just means the volunteering acts I do for med school are not to be counted as benevolent acts.

When you say "volunteering is a must to get into med school" that pretty much means that you're a complete jackass. Sorry. If you were so serious about not being a jackass, why don't you volunteer doing something you like? Actually be genuine and have the perk that comes along with it too.

You shame those of us that volunteer for the good of it rather than because they want to get ahead in the world.

Read some thoughtful books.

Open up your mind instead of finding distractions.

Stay away from the TV unless you have something you really want to watch(cutting cold turkey is too hard sometimes).

I do volunteer doing stuff I like. I plan on tutoring high school kids, and working with developmentally disabled kids. Both of which I have done in the past. If I didnt have to worry about my resume this summer, I would probably still volunteer some with disabled kids, and possibly tutor. I wouldn't be doing it 2-3 days a week, and I can't say for 100% certain I would be doing it at all because I am not in that situation, but I would still probably do some volunteering. My primary motivation for volunteering is medical school though and there is nothing wrong with that.

[/ QUOTE ]
In no way do I shame volunteers. I have volunteered before and have been a paid employee in charge of volunteers. I know the difference good volunteers make, and what is expected of them. Just because my main goal is medical school doesn't mean I slack off when I volunteer. I work damn hard and do a damn good job.

Give the kid a break. It's hard to get people to volunteer, period. If he contributes something but has selfish intentions, is that really SO bad?

Although if you want to be a doctor to "help" society then volunteering isn't something should feel like an obligation.

You need to replace and/or supplement your "golf and tennis lessons" with simply golfing and playing tennis. Also, what about a road trip? Always good times.

come over to my house and help me wrench on my corrado, then when that's done help me wrench on my GTI, and when the GTI is solid and boosted and all of the body work's done help me throw a caddy V8 in my fiero. That would be a good use of your summer. You can do all of this when I'm at work bringin home the bread.
