I feel like I played this incorrectly. I'm thinking my flop bet is really weak inviting all kinds of draws and overpairs and any other playable hand that hit the flop to call behind me. I should've potted it to make my decisions on latter streets easier. Anyhow, I bet small testing the waters because it was a limped pot and my hand could very well be no good.

Second, I checked the turn to see how the action develops behind me. If it turned out to be heavy, I would've folded. I risked giving a free card sensing that wouldn't happen. Perhaps my second mistake.

I'd like some comments on different approaches to this hand. Thanks.

Bet more on the flop. Bet the turn. Put out a blocking/value bet on the river.

You set yourself up to get drawn out on here, or blown out of the pot by an aggro opponent. I don't know if either one happened, but it is just something to think about.

Edit: I don't think your line was terrible though, as you might have scared away an overpair with a more aggressive betting line.

First off, you could stick this in the high stakes NL forum.. anything over 2/4 can go there.

Secondly I'd definitely bet the flop harder... however, when the blank comes on the turn, I am betting out again. There is no reason to expect that we are behind here, some junky 2 pair or a bigger set would have raised you on the flop. I then throw out a blocking type-bet on the river to make it really difficult for someone to raise you.

Well I think you correctly analyzed your hand. The flop bet needed to be a bit larger. At least 2/3 of pot itsn't bad here, and I'd prefer it over pot sized for several reasons. It may make some people call with gutshots getting incorrect odds and I think you have a fairly solid hand even though the pot is multi-way. I'm not sure what your turn check is about?? If you're concerned about the board, a check raise-isn't that bad here. Yet giving up control of the hand at this point is way too timid. You need to stay in control of this hand. I mean what range of hands are you putting UTG+1 on that say you may be beat? I'm totally confused unless he's playing junk cards from EP. I would have value bet the river as well.

Well, I think you know you misplayed the hand, but the bigger question is why did you? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think you meant to say "if you're not concerned about the board, and you know villain will bet out, a check-raise isn't that bad here." What you said makes negative sense. All rebuttals welcomed.

blindpost:

i'm a beginning NL player, my game is usually limit though. but here's my 2 cents.

because it was a limped pot and my hand could very well be no good.

I don't blieve that someone's going to beat you here. There are straight draws out there, so double the pot. Its not common that a set beats a set at the showdown (eg. 444 beats your 222). I think you have little fear here. You had a great opportunity to check raise the turn. You have a very good hand. That eight doesn't do much for anybody. I think the UTG+1 guy thinks you have junk. Please correct him /images/graemlins/wink.gif I don't know the players are your table. seems like UTG+1 wants to know where you're at. Let him know... I wouldn't slow play this because, like your subject says, scarry flop. Fast play it, hope for the best
