View Full Version : What is your favorite foreign country?

vulturesrow

My overseas travel is mostly limited to the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf. That being said, I think Crete is my favorite by far. I love the atmosphere and everyone was very friendly to me there. Food was good, just a great experience overall, both times I have been there. For sheer balls to the wall fun it is hard to beat Dubai or Marmaris(Turkey). What say ye, OOTiots?

Yes. I'm from there so I suppose it isn't a foreign country to me. Maybe I should have said the U.S.? But I live there now. Anyway, whicvhever one is the foreign one of the two is the one I'm choosing for purposes of this thread.

Best foreign country is:

Food wise: France
Entertainment wise: Israel (also ranks tops in hot chicks)
Different experience wise: Japan

All that said, there's no place like home. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Venezuela. Not the safest place to visit at the moment. But indescribably beautiful (the women too). Canaima Natl Park, which includes Angel Falls & Auyan Tepuy should be on everyone's list as a place to see before they die.

My most memorable memories of a trip was to the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Terrific long bush walks in Moremi State Park and of course the diversity of the delta.

For arnfinn -- the flight landing in Tromso over the fjords is beautiful and unique.

I love the energy and liberal nature of Amsterdam.

The food in Vietnam.

The people of France.

Scuba Diving in Phuket and the Phillipines.

The beauty of the Garden Route in South Africa.

The isolation of Tobago (this was 15 years ago, it has no doubt changed).

I spent 10 days in Paris in Oct 2001 (just after 9/11) and found the people friendly, warm and very concerned about America and it peoples.

Not sure how they would react now. We destroyed that good will, perhaps.

It's different if you had to grow up here..... You call 12 pints of lager, a curry, a fight, followed by a cheap [censored] civilised? You call an 19th century class system civilized? You call 6 months of grey skies civilized? You call this nation of rude, depressed people civilized? Have you ever been to Brimingham? Or Watford? Or Milton Keynes? Or Swindon? Or Slough? Or 99% of the country for that matter....

Anyway, most Europeans are far more civilized than us British. And Americans have far better manners than we do, although for some reason they allways compliment us on them.

Oh yeah, and the french will be cool with you as long as you:
A) Aren't some obesely fat tourist who goes around asking for McDonalds.
B) Express some sort of anti-bush sentiment
C) Make some attempt at speaking the language, and show some sort of cultural maturity.
D) Do not display any kind of cultural arrogance. The French are even more proud than Americans, believe it or not.

Now this post is accurate.

Generaly speaking the people of France aren't the nicest to North Americans. I wouldn't read too much into how they seemed during that particular crisis, their overall attitude towards the non-french usually sucks.

If there is anything I hate it's intolerance of other peoples cultures. And the French.

Me too.

And the French.

Not me. To me the two do not connect.

Far worse is the attitude in some countries (specially Asia) where they are very friendly but really all they want is your biz.

While working at Carnegie Mellon (many years ago) I lived with a French girl (as room mates only, sigh), she was my first introduction to a French person and since then they have all been uniformly pleasant and tolerant.

Far and away, my favorite country I've visited is Australia. Of course, its hard NOT to love the perfect beaches, the beautiful women, and the fact that I was technically of age while I was down there following senior year of high school, so going to the bars with my friends was sweet.

Went there for a "football all-star" game with a company called International Sports Specialists...Surfer's Paradise on the Gold Coast. There was even a 4th of July parade and cool [censored] like that. There really isn't anything like waking up, going to the beach, checking out the "scenery", then going to play a football game (MN all-stars won the tournament too!) then going back to the beach and the bars. Even at night, sitting on the hotel room's balcony and just watching the ocean...I'm going back someday...

I also really enjoyed Germany. Beer, food, scenery, everything. Kicked major ass.

I only visited Cairnes in Australia. Beautiful place though. The GBR is just fanfargintastic.

Plus, it was the first land I'd seen in over 45 days. Stupid Navy boats and their "we don't need no stinkin land" mentality.

Some foreign countries that I do not like:

Manhattan: You're forced to rely on public transportation due to the impossible logistics of maintaining an automobile without many places to park it, even if you do drive it around. Then, said public transportation is flaky precisely when you're relying on it to be reliable. Yes, it is the best public transportation application that I have ever seen, but that just shows how much all the other ones suck. Oh, and they condition the people there to accept not getting free refills of 4 cent/glass (cost) soda that you pay $3 for. This is annoying after being used to having free soda thrown at me in Vegas/California.

Southern California: A country made up by far too many guilt-ridden leftists to ever be comfortable in. Housing prices are ridiculous (though not as ridiculous as the nation of Manhattan). Around the principality of Los Angeles you're forced to live in either a bad area, or in a small good area surrounded by bad areas. Wonderful setup. The roads are all falling apart, and the people tend to elect jackasses to govern. It's pathetic when Arnold is 1000x better than the last jerkoff who was in office.

Mexico really sucks too.

Canada is a pretty nice place, though. The United States is up there as well.

I can't speak to the Nation of Las Vegas, since I'm a resident.

Excellent post Mr. Duke from the Nation of Las Vegas, but I must take issue with one statement: 'Mexico really sucks too.' True, if you mostly hang around border towns or other areas of devastation and you no doubt expected some sort of order. That is Bad Form and unrealistic expectations.

Also, there are portions of Mexico that are serene and beautiful and peaceful and absolutely nothing gets done all day long, which is about as close to paradise as you will ever come on this cesspool of a planet.
