Every Monday I host a fantastic 3/6 'home' game that is filled with a few 2+2ers, and tons of fish (we try our best to stock the fish tank every week... and if you have ever been there before you'd get the double meaning immediately). This week there was a new dealer who had never dealt this game before. I was sitting in the 2nd position, and a player brand new to casino hold'em was sitting to my left. The new player was splashing his chips in odd places, this time he happened to be UTG. I checked in the BB with A5s against a full field and held my left hand over the cards to protect them (I never use a card protector). As the dealer was reaching over to grab UTG's chips he pushed his hand into mine and the cards upward to flash 1/2 the table.

The floor was summoned, it was decided my hand was dead but since I had protected my cards I would be refunded my investment into the pot. I think this is a fair ruling since this was of no fault of my own, it was clearly an error of the dealer since I was protecting my cards the entire time (just not good enough it seems). But what if this occurred on the turn, or even on the river heads up? What would be a fair ruling? We have all been discussing this for the past two days... its a very unique scenario.

this reminds me of a similiar situation i had while at the casino. i had some garbage hand and i was folding it by flicking my finger against the side of the cards and it shot across the table and touched another players unprotected cards who had already called. his hand was dead. i felt sooo bad. luckily the guy was pretty cool about it. moral of the story, always protect your cards.

2 things differ in your story (that happened to me once too... I felt horrible about it)

1) the guys cards were unprotected
2) It was the action of another player, not the dealer's mistake

Thats what makes my situation so odd... I truly wouldn't have a clue what to do if I were the floor!

If I'm the floor, I'm not killing your hand. But since half the table saw it, we're going to turn 'em up, and show the rest of the table.

BTW, you weren't protecting your hand. You THINK you were, but you weren't. Resting your hand on your cards is not adequate protection. You really need to act like a guard dog, and be particularly on your guard when anyone's hands (dealer or player) get near your cards.

Don't blame the dealer. You need to protect your hand, FROM EVERYBODY. Even the dealer.

BTW, if I was the floor, I would also make an effort to pursuade the other players to refund your pre-flop bet from the pot. But not much of one. /images/graemlins/smile.gif
