Funnily enough, I'd say that I'm good at each of those, but no where near good enough to say I'm great. Better word you could've used: legit

And as far as Ping Pong goes, I doubt I am the best at 2+2.

Bowling, I don't think I'm great, but on any given day I can give you a run for it (which is what I said in the other thread).

Im very good at Ping Pong. And when in form can beat 99% of "great" ping pong players, but I am a joke compared to the truly great players.

The others I blow at, but observed to be true. I knew a very good Bond player and he beat so many "awesome" Bond players it was stupid. I'm sure there are people that could make him look like he never played before.

As for pool, people ask me if I'm good and I always say I stink and they invariably say they are "real good". Yet, I almost always win.

People have no clue what good is. I always try to remember that if you haven't dedicated your life to something, you probably aren't as good as you think.

James Bond: N64 game?

I thought it was a pretty popular game when it first came out. Maybe not, I'm not a huge video game person.

I'll add another video game to the list, but I'm sure all video games work:

Starcraft

thats not true. If they've seen the best do something, then they have an idea. I can watch billiards on ESPN and get an idea of what the top level is like. I can watch the olympics and see what badass at ping pong really is.

Its the people who have never venutred out and seen that stuff, and just have the mediocre people they play against for comparison, who have no idea what good is.

oh, ok. I think any first person shooter would work. I was huge into doom2 and quake, and have played with some of the best players in the world, but yeah, there were servers full of people who had never played anyone of that caliber, and thought they were good.

I remember when I first started playing doom. Me and my friends played over the modem ALL the time against each other, and thought we were pretty bad ass. Then we got on DWANGO (just pretend it was the internet, same principle) and we were full of [censored] talking and stuff, then we had a HUGE wake up call because we saw that we royally sucked. I think thats how lots of people are, they dont have much to relate their skill level too, cuz they dont play anyone outside a certain circle.

This is very true. I saw a quote by Chip Reese that was something like (I'm paraphrasing) "If you haven't seen people that play on the top level (of poker), you woulden't even know that level existed."

I'll add beer pong (or beirut) to the list.

i think the #1 thing everyone thinks they are good at (even if they are are aren't) is sex. then you can list pool, poker etc.

Skipbidder

I think that when someone says they are good at ping pong, it is usually a pretty good sign that they might be good at ping-pong but aren't so good at table tennis. They'll place their off hand on the table for slams. Their serves will be illegal for at least two different reasons. If you show em some backspin, they'll drive it right into the net.

Personally, I was good enough to win intramural competition fairly easily at a small liberal arts college, but get my ass handed to me when I played in the club at the bigger state school. People who knew what they were doing made me look like a no-talent assclown.

You can beat a better pool player every once in a while. You aren't going to beat a better table tennis player very often.

If you play ping pong/table tennis with anyone who's remotely serious about the game, it is not pretty.

A game where there is the greatest gulf from "beginner/kitchen table" to "good player" to "great player" is chess. There is almost no chance of anyone from beginner beating good or good beating great. And the worst is that when you are good, and you play a great player, you know you're going to lose, and you don't understand how you lost when it's over. It's *really* frustrating.

i have played private homegames with the repeat world champion (in singles and doubles) from a few years ago. He was amazing to watch. He travelled around the world looking for games. It finally got to the point where he coudln't find anyone to gamble with him anywhere. It was ridiculous.

I used to be pretty decent at pool.

I played an average of around 4 days a week for several hours a day.

On a typical friday night in a pool hall, I was maybe top 5. There are some people that just get the game better than you. They are more creative, better shot makers, conceptualize better than you do, etc.

I wish I had more time to play, but life got in the way. Kinda like with poker. I don't have enough time to be anything more than a donator.

And that sucks.

Poker
Guitar
Ultimate Frisbee
Math

now I realize that I am merely better than average in all three, but by no means "good". I'm only "good" relative to what I've been exposed to. I imagine the longer I'm around, the worse I'll get at all of these.
