Villain is 55/5/36/~1.5 after 150+ hands. He's pretty aggressive postflop and bluffs too much, though not obsessively as far as I can tell. Also, he'll take small pairs too far, even under heat. I've 3-bet him on the flop twice recently, once with a double gutter and the other time I think I had top pair.

On the flop I was fairly sure he was bluffing and decided to let him keep at it. On the river I figured he would definitely bet a queen or five, and maybe an eight, four or pocket pair. I did not expect him to call with a worse hand, but I thought I would be ahead very often and didn't want to showdown my hand.

I'm primarily concerned with the river bet and whether to call or 3-bet the flop, or maybe even raise the turn.

Well played besides the river bet. Why don't you want to showdown your hand? If anything it shows you to be unbluffable which is a good thing, but it's not like this guy is paying attention.

I don't remember my thoughts at the time, but for some reason I had a strong urge not to show my hand. Who knows /images/graemlins/confused.gif

If the *only* reason you bet the river was because you didnt want to show down your hand, then it's a horrible bet, and that appears to be it.

Raising the turn seems bad - a 3-bet would put you in a very awkward situation and you want him to continue his bluff on the river if he is bluffing.

players like this love to bluff paired boards like this - too many of us tight players will fold the AJ here.

Since the river bet has no value, I don't realyl get it - I think showing your hand down and winning here is great.

I think we gain so much more by showing our hand down and seeing his hand. We pay more attention then the average donk and you can use that information much more to your advantage than not showing your hand.

Put me in the check behind on the river camp. You said it yourself, he's calling you with that overplayed small pair. Might as well take the free showdown. I will say that if you're calling on the turn, it's probably cheaper to 3bet the flop.

It is cheaper to 3-bet the flop assuming you're behind. Here, we want the villain to continue his bluff on the turn, and hopefully the river. This is something he will not do if we 3bet the flop - that will leave us folding his bluffing hands and being called/capped by his hands that are ahead of us.

Yeah, you're right, 3bet is bad on the flop.
