trying to improve my pre-flop play. obviously i pushed here, but what would you have done?

When you say obviously you pushed, I hope you don't mean all-in. I voted raise.

my play would be based on what they have seen me play obviously. i said raise though.

Raise the same amount as you'd raise here if you had AKs or JJ, whatever your betting pattern has been so far in the game. That way, you can play your position if A/K/Q/J falls on the flop for a continuation bet if everybody checks to you. You can also often hit a flop that lets you bet aggressively with semi-bluffs for a straight or flush draw. Or, in the best case, you can flop a monster vs TPWK or two pair that one of the villain's catches on the flop. Of course, if you have no outs and someone bets into you on the flop, you can fold easily. Finally, you might even win preflop, if the table is tight.

in the actual hand i limped, but looking at it later i think raising is the right move for the reasons you list. Interesting that the poll is half and half.

Lots of dead money + position + quality no-limit hand = raise


and its not even close IMO

youre the big stack, obviously raise and flat call a reraise from a blind
