View Full Version : Best Dates to play against tourists?

11-12-2002, 09:15 PM
<pre><font class="small">code:</font><hr>Hi Everyone,
As any of you Vegas locals know, the casinos lay off heavily at the end of the year.
When I was living out there I always swore I'd get a convention calendar and try to
pick the best dates to play based on that. But, never did.
.
Can anyone pinpoint best times to be in town to play non-regulars?
.
You know, rule #1, game selection! (If I'm going to travel in these days, might as well
optimize my date selection.)
.
Sincerely,
Frank</pre><hr>

March (Final Four) and May (WSOP) are also real good times. IMHOMy favorite is December when all the cowboys come to town to ride, rope &amp; play poker to the river's end.Best of LuckHoward

I agree with the previous two posters. I am a tourist myself, but I'll never forget the time I was in Vegas when the national rodeo finals were there.

There were quite a few dress up shitkickers from New Jersey drinking Jack Daniels and trying their hand at poker.

<pre><font class="small">code:</font><hr>Hi Journeyman,
Hope no one took offense to the term "tourists" in here. Even if you are a tourist,
it might be beneficial to pick times when other "gambooler" tourists are around.
.
Anyway, lived in Vegas for a while and even dealt on the strip for time (Blackjack), so
the terminology is burned in, even if I'm now a tourist myself!
.
I left before I got around to a more thorough study of the idea of aiming at various
conventions. Looks like everyone here figures the Rodeo is the big one thought.
.
Was thinking maybe Winston Cup too. But perhaps not.
.
Thanks!
.
Sincerely,

&gt;&gt;&gt; Try Super Bowl weekend. &lt;&lt;&lt;

In Atlantic City, any Sunday of a big New York Giants televised game. The Sunday of a Phila Eagles televised game is interesting, but it is better to play against New Yorkers who do not play as frequently. Table selection problem: You may ended up seated with other sharks waiting for the fish. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

I don't take any offense at being known as a tourist; I usually am in Vegas for conventions or seminars and a lot of times don't bother to take off my credentials.

It seems like the local pros lick their chops and take shots at me all night. When I get a few lucky cards I end up a big winner.

But, I also have some ugly nights.

I am a tourist who plays in the $8-16 Bellagio and $10-20 Mirage HE games 4 times per year. I must say that I find it funny to hear people talking about tourists as if they are easy prey. I play the $5-10 Paradise Poker HE game daily and it is much tougher than any Vegas game that I play while on vacation. So beware Vegas locals, the tourists may be better than you think.

No insult intended by me.

I'm a former resident who is now a "tourist".

To me, just sounds better than "fish".

Perhaps "tourist" is a prejudicial term. But it has a common usage meaning everyone knows.

Anyway, for what it's worth, during my time in Vegas, more than one "old time" dealer stated that the proliferation of legal poker elsewhere had ruined poker in Vegas.

Both because there were less tourists, and the one's coming in are better.

I'd say, just blow the term off as an anachronism from the times when Vegas as the only legal gambling.

Sincerely,
Frank
