Multi-Table Screen Set-up

I am having a helleva time trying to figure out how to set up my 17" computer screen to be able to see multiple screens at one time. Someone mentioned changing screen resolution? How do I do this? -Then how do I get both screens to appear, Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Screen resolution should be in the control panel/monitor. You need to adjust the pixel size.
