I love K-rod and the Halos, but for one out I think Gagne is better. man right now it's hard to not say Clemens. The old man is damn out of control!

Gibson would be a good choice, but then again Gibson would be a good choice if you needed 27 outs.

If I wanted one out, I'd want someone who could generate some fear in the batter. Someone like J R Richards, or, hey, now that you mention it, Bob Gibson.

I think he's a bit overrated myself. Sure, in his prime, he was great. His strikeout rate was excellent. But even then, his walk rate was poor. He is among the all time leaders in career hit batsmen per batters faced.

I think alot of his perceived value comes from his reputation as being a "clutch" pitcher. This is based on his performance down the stretch in the Indians' pennant runs in 1988.5 and 1989.5. However, numerous studies have concluded that "clutch" hitters are either non-existant or very rare. Although no studies on "clutch" pitchers have been done to my knowledge, I see no reason to believe that it is any different for pitchers. Regardless, his "clutch" numbers were actually no better than his typical numbers - opponents actually hit for a slightly higher OPS with runners on base than they did with the bases empty.

You're poll is gay. And right now my choice of all the current pitchers in baseball would be Jason Schmidt. If you are only talking about relievers, then I choose Brad Lidge.

This depends on exact situation too. 2 outs guy on third and you want a Nolan Ryan type, but that don't work with bases loaded.

You guys mean the pre-steroid testing Gagne, right? Because if you've seen him hanging around the Dodger dugout this season (where he's still sloooooowly recovering), your boy has dropped more than a couple lb's.

With the funk that Lidge is in, it's gotta be between Gagne and K-Rod. The difference is that Gagne is injured and K-Rod isn't, and K-Rod's slider = the nuts. I'm going with K-Rod, although I think Wagner is also a good choice.

I'm not his biggest fan (anymore), but I can't believe nobody's mentioned Pedro. If he's warmed up and not tired, and Grady Little isn't his manager, I think Pedro gets anybody he wants.

They lowered the mound in 1969 SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE no one could hit Gibson

Not K Rod is the bases are loaded, because that curve of his sometimes is out of control.

For one out, I'll take Gagne. I know he's on the DL just now, but based on his last two years' pitching.

It had nothing to do with the fact that entire league had a sub-three ERA in 1968? Or with the fact that a nobody like Bobby Bolin had a 1.99 ERA?

today: Smoltz

All time: Satchel Paige...not close. when he toured, he routinely played the first inning without a defense, just him and the catcher. he also routinely guaranteed the first 3 batters would strike out, or everyone would get their money back.

cheers!

K-Rod (career) 18 SV, 34 Holds, 12 BS leads blown- 19%
Gagne (career) 152 SV, 1 Hold, 6 BS leads blown- 4%
Rivera (career) 339 SV, 29 holds, 50 BS leads blown- 12%

if he can't even consistently keep the lead, then just how reliable is that one out?

per MLB.com, top 5 all-time in Opponent OBA, Min 2000 IP

1. Pedro .270
2. Koufax .275
3. Babe Adams (Pit 1907-26) .277
4. J. Marichal .277
5. G. Alexander .281
6. C. Schilling (!) .282
7. T. Seaver .283
8. C. Hunter .285
9. Slim Sallee (StL, etc. 1908-21) .285
10. C. Hubbell .286

Eck is 18th. Smoltz 20th. Clemens and RJ tied for 27th

Pedro's lead there is just stunning.

Gagne .288, Rivera .274, K-Rod .256...gagne's #'s are inflated by his failed time as a starter. 3 year line as a closer: .235, .199 (!!), .248
