View Full Version : Place to Move?

I currently live in Toronto, Canada. I'm looking to buy a condo somewhere, but haven't travelled to enough places to make an educated decision. I'm thinking about somewhere in Florida and even considered moving back to South Africa, but need more advice before I focus on a place.

Things i'm looking for:

-Warm weather
-Internet connection
-Civilized
-Hot girls
-At least somewhat cheap cost of living and low taxes
-Good food

Things to consider:

-I'm really young, 19, and i'm moving out on my own. I need to go somewhere thats friendly and easy to meet people. BTW, my brother is 21 and looks exactly like me, so i don't have a problem with bars in the States, so don't factor that in.
-I'll be working from home, so job oppurtinities are not necessary considerations.
-Also, I like music, philosophy, politics and poker incase that helps your suggestions.

Except for the cost of living thing, I'd recommend here in Miami. Also the $2 max bet thing in Florida sucks for the limit players. Plenty of other places in Florida with much lower cost of living though.

Also, if you're a typical liberal Canadian, you'd love Austin, TX. Awesome bars. Hot women. It's the "Live Music Capital of the World" too.

Well the women in Florida are incredible, especially here in S.Florida. We have internet. Not too civilized. Weather is either Warm or Hot. We have no state tax but the cost of living is brutal.

If I was going to pick up and move I would def research other places. Maybe Cali or Arizona. At least living in the West US you have many great places you can get to in a short time. In Florida your stuck.

I would suggest Denver or Colorado Springs. I grew up in northern Wisconson and I bet the weather there is somewhat akin to Toronto. The reason I suggest Colorado is that you may be in for a shock at how hot it gets in Texas, Florida, or Georgia. To me Colorado has the perfect weather. In the winter the temperature is usually between 45 and 55 (short sleeve weather for us) with it occasionally getting into the 60's. When it snows, it melts by noon the next day. I would dread snow falling when I lived in Wisconsin, but in Denver it was good news. The ski slopes are an hour west and you know that the snow in Denver will only last 24 hrs usually. The summer is hot during the day, but because of the dry climate it cools off significantly at night.

As far as sports, Denver is a huge hockey town, has a MLS team, as well as typical American sports of baseball, football, and basketball. Hiking in the mountains, skiing, and rock climbing are my favorite things to there.

I think it might be too expensive and lacking in the 18-21 scene, but I'd throw my weight behind DC/Northern Virginia.

This area by far and away violates cost considerations, but from the 3+ months I've been here, the 20-something female crowd is outstanding, at least compared to San Diego and the SF Bay Area where I came from. Much of my activity revolves around the weekday happy hour scence, but I can tell you that is fully ripe.

Edit: I fully lack info on the weekend scene. I usually stay home on Friday/Saturday to make up for the money I blow during the week.

New Orleans

Warm weather - Yes
Internet connection - Yes
Civilized - Depends what you mean, but probably Yes
Hot girls - Just check out the Tulane girls at Audubon Park on any sunny afternoon
Cost of living - Very cheap compared to most major cities in the US
Good food - Give me a break, the best, and it's relitively cheap.

You're 19, so you'll love the bar/night life seen. The drinking age recently increased to 21 (used to be 18), but most places don't care.

Great music seen, including the world's best jazz. Tons of artists and art galleries (if you're into that).

Lot's of live poker. Harrahs downtown has a large poker room, plus you're only about an hour away from dozens of casinos in Biloxi.

Don't move to Denver. Denver sucks. Seriously. Stay away from Denver. The people here are assholes and it's always snowing or raining. It's raining right now. You should not move here because it's very boring also. There's not a lot to do and no good food or night life. I would totally move away if I could, but I can't.

Don't move to Denver. Stay far, far away.

No. I don't want people moving to my city. At the worst, it's the Californians and the Texans moving here that annoy the piss out of me.

OK. It's fine if anyone wants to move to Colorado, but we need to lay out a few ground rules.

1. We are not all [censored] cowboys. If you get caught wearing a cowboy hat around here, you need to have your ass beat.

2. It does not always snow here. We have over 300 days of sunshine (more than San Diego). You do not need to purchase a Lincoln Navigator to live here. If you buy one, you need to have your ass beat. This brings us to the next point...

3. It does snow here from time to time. You need to learn how to drive in it. This does not involve owning a 4WD vehicle or going extremely slow. It involves driving correctly in incliment weather. If you don't know how to do it...please don't move here (I'll grant you, some Canadians probably get a pass on this one).

4. If you move here and you don't like it, please...please get the [censored] out. We didn't want you here in the first place. I am sick of meeting people here who are transplants from other places (usually Texas, New York, or California) who cannot shut the [censored] up about how ass-backwards Denver is, or how we're "three years behind" either the East or West coasts. To make it clear: We don't care. We live here because we don't like 50-square miles filled with nothing but pavement and stupid cunts that wear baby doll tees and driving caps.

4. You must like football. If you are black or white, this means you will cheer for the Broncos. If you are Mexican, this means you will cheer for the Raiders. No one knows why. This is just the way it has always been.

5. You must like the outdoors (and I mean real outdoors [censored]. Not walking around window shopping. I'm talking hiking Eldorado Springs or playing football in the park).

6. You may not move to Highlands Ranch. We have enough of those pricks already.

If you can deal with these rules and are relatively laid back, welcome to Colorado. If not...I think you'll find Seattle to your liking.

Tempe sounds perfect for you. In the phoenix area, and home to Arizona State University.

Warm weather, check.
Internet Connection, check.
Civilized, check.
Hot girls, big time check.
Cheap cost of living and low taxes, check.

All the east-coasters rip into the food here, but I've never had any complaints.

The bar scene is rip-roaring, and plenty of beautiful college-aged people all over the place. Scottsdale is very nice too, but more expensive.

We're one of the major metropolitan areas of the country, so all the big name bands tour here. Plus LA and Vegas are just 5-6 hour drives away.

And plenty of poker. Casino AZ is huge (50+ tables) and spreads a wide variety of limits up to 75/150. There are several other casinos within short driving distance that spread low limits.

BTW, my girlfriend moved here from Johannesburg about 3 years ago and loves the climate.

Are you saying that native Coloradans know how to drive in the snow? In my time there I saw 100 times the dumbass drivers than I did in WI. They can't all be from Texas or Cali, or can they... If they are the source of all that madness, then I don't blame you at all for being so pissed. As far as your fourth point, anyone moving from the north (like the OP) will appreciate the superiority of Denver over where they came from. To not do so is sheer idiocy.

If you are me, you cheer for the 49ers just to piss everyone off. No one knows why. This is just the way it has always been.

5. You must like the outdoors (and I mean real outdoors [censored]. Not walking around window shopping. I'm talking hiking, fishing, hunting [no, not cats, smartas[/i]s], or playing football in the park). Tailgating football games, ice fishing, polar bear plunges in 0 degree weather, and drinking beer outside for no good goddamn reason all fall under this heading.

6. You may not move to Middleton, Fitchburg, or the West Side. We have enough of those pricks already. If you move to any of the tiny suburbs of Madison, you're a prick. If you move to Verona and commute in, you should seriously think about killing yourself.

If you can deal with these rules and are relatively laid back, welcome to Madison.

Great weather.

Several casinos that allow 18yrs+. See location.
Great night life.

I am biased though because I go to college in SD. It is very nice though.

I was actually thinking about suggesting San Diego. I've never met a person from there who hasn't liked it, and I also think it would probably be an easier transition from Canada to San Diego than Canada to LA... Maybe after a couple of years in SoCal that jump can be made.

I'm surprised anyone would want to leave Toronto. Yeah, the weather sucks but it is nevertheless a very chic cosmopolitan city with a multi-cultural atmosphere that actually works. Not to mention babes o' plenty.

Also, I've never been more disappointed in my life by the rude people and ugly women that I found in Biloxi and New Orleans. I really wanted to like them, too. Maybe I just hit them at the wrong time.

My Canadian brother - let me make a suggestion.

I currently live in Toronto - where it is cold, wet and dreary 6 months out of the year. I live here because this is where I work and this is where my wife is from (what the hell is it with girls wanting to live close to their momies???).

Anyway, I moved to Toronto from Vancouver BC - the most beautifull place anywhere. If you can handle some rain (just play poker on those days), then you are in for a treat. It almost never snows, you are close to the water AND the mountains (your choice of outdoor activities), poker is available in abundance (both casino and club games), the weed is GREAT (if you are into that kinda stuff) and the girls are beautifull!. The whole city is very laid back and I consider it the best place on earth (till I'm proven otherwise). Just to give you some perspective. I have lived (for at least one year) in:

1. Israel
2. Montreal
3. Toronto
4. New York
5. Vancouver
6. Paris

I have visited and stayed at:

1. Amsterdam
2. LA
3. Vegas
4. Japan
5. London, England (no offence, this place sucks...)
6. Australia (multiple cities)
7. Other various US cities
8. Various Carribiean locations
9. Ireland
10. Other places I can't even remember now - prolly because they were lame.

The only place that comes even close to Vancouver amongst all the places I've been is Sydney, Australia which has similar bonuses (and even better weather) but is too far to consider moving there.

In summary, my advice is - stay Canadian - move to BC!
