He either has the K, picked up a flush draw or just bluffs.
It is also possible that he has a weak A like A2 and he wants to test you because he's not outkicked anymore.
So you really need a good read here.

I don't know if a turn check is bad? I expect a raise here with all the hands I described above, so nearly 90% of the time.

Why call the turn and fold the river? Use your read on the turn to decide fold now or call down.

the stupid bit is folding to the river bet - the combined chance of splitting or winning this pot is usually greater than the 8/1 odds on offer - if your going to fold you should fold to the turn raise - i can fold to that turn raise but its the exception

the turn is a good card to go into check/call mode
