can someone explain to me why david lynch deserves to be on this list? i've never understood why people liked his work.

i asked someone why they liked his movies and they said "because i've seen it 35 times and every time i watch it, it still makes no sense" refering to Lost Highway.

edited for anecdote

I've got some friends that think David Lynch is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Near as I can tell, it's because his movies are like Jackson Pollock paintings. They're not really about anything and they're basically just two hours of emotion put to film. Some people dig that.

Personally, I think it's crap.

Oh, and this poll is invalid for not having Kirosawa and Wes Anderson on it.

I really hasn't seen much of his work, and the only one I own is NxNW (which is incredibly sweet).

I chose the Coen Brothers and Kubrick.

Lemme guess...are you one of those people who doesn't go to movies with subtitles because they don't like reading?

Your list is pretty xenophobic.

David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino - while great - do not belong in this poll, as they are still at the beginning of their careers and have not made nearly enough movies to properly jusge them against the others.

E.T., Schindler's List, Jurassic Park... all great movies, and all completely different. I am a little surprised Spielberg is't running away with this, but I am happy that Kubrick is being appreciated.

Billy Wilder is the greatest American filmmaker of all-time.

Double Indemnity
The Lost Weekend
A Foreign Affair
Sunset Boulevard
Ace in the Hole
Sabrina
The Seven Year Itch
The Spirit of St. Louis
Witness for the Prosecution
Some Like It Hot
Ninotchka
The Apartment

among others....anyone who has directed both the greatest comedy of all-time (SLIH),the greatest film noir of all time (Double Indemnity), and the greatest dark, romantic comedy of all time (The Apartment)....deserves more votes.

And yes I know Wilder wasn't American - he was Austrian - but his great films were all made in America with a definite American "vibe."

This poll wasn't made for a bunch of film buffs, it was designed for OOTers. I'm pretty sure 90% of OOT hasn't heard of Kurusawa, Bergman, Fellini, Bunuel, etc.

Because David Lynch is a brilliant movie director.

Yes, it's true--many turtle-necked assholes like to roll their eyes when asked "what that David Lynch movie was about," but that doesn't invalidate him as a director. Just because Fuhrman framed Simpson doesn't mean he didn't do it.

Sorry. Got sidetracked.

Yes, David Lynch's films are less accessible than most. And yes, they are open to interpretation.

But look at The Elephant Man, for example. It's "coherent," and it's "traditional," and it's great.

I liked, but did not love Mulholland Drive. Ditto Wild At Heart. But they were both better than 95% of the crap that Steven Spielberg has made.

I thought Blue Velvet and Lost Highway were both fantastic, and I don't wear a turtleneck or smoke cloves or even really consider myself a movie guy, necessarily.

A good friend of mine recently tried to advance this same theory to me.

It makes me wonder--have you guys actually ever SEEN any Scorcese films? You don't think that being responsible for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and Mean Streets should be good for SOME recognition in the Pantheon Of Movie Greatness?

I don't get it.

Dammit, I didn't see that we could choose more than one.

I voted for Scorsece. QT and the Coens should each have one more vote.

(Blake Edwards and Mel Brooks deserve a mention.)

I selected Kubrick, Fincher, and Other for Terrence Malick. These guys are my favorites, but only Kubrick would have any sort of legitimate claim to being one of the greatest directors ever.

Felix - if Tarantino is one of your favorite directors, that is fine. But to claim that "Spike Lee is Not Fit to lick the elephant dung off of Q.Tarantino's shoes" is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read on these forums, and that's saying a lot. Lee will never make a movie as entertaining as Pulp Fiction, but Tarantino never has, nor ever will, make movies that are as good or have as much to say as 25th Hour and Bamboozled.
