It has just become possible for me to fit a bigscreen in my home, and I want to get one ASAP. However, I know very little about them. I don't really have alot of preferences on them. I would preferable get one around 52 inches or so, and probably one with HDTV. I definitely won't spend over 3000, and would rather spend like 2000. I mainly want one that will be reliable, will look good, and is easy to install/operate.

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated it. Links would be great.

P.S. I've looked at some TVs at Sam's Club and they seem to be good with low prices. Anyone know if they carry any worth buying?

Are you looking for one that sits down, or one for your wall?

Id wait til they start shipping this (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-VgUYy5qRSvb/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=153650&I=610DV3750) bad boy. Check out that price point and the lovely resolution. Should be able to 4-table with minimal overlap /images/graemlins/grin.gif

One word: projector.

I got me a $750 infocus projector a while ago and have never looked back: 8 foot screen in a tiny room and excellent picture. Doesn't take up any space and weighs a fraction of a TV...

Definitely one that sits on the ground for now. No place to hang it in our current living room.

That one is only 37 inches and doesn't seem to sit up off the ground enough to stand alone. I'd really rather have one that stands alone.

get a sony KDF-50WE655 50" lcd. it will be under 3k at best buy. you're not going to get a good quality plasma for that price, and it's preferrable to avoid dlp because even if you don't see rainbows your roommates/guests might. the 'one word: projector' is a bad idea for general viewing, those should really only be used in a windowless basement or theater room. based on what i've seen in similar threads i'm reasonably certain i know more about buying tvs than anybody on 2+2 (or at least anybody who posts about it).

the cheapest big hdtvs you're going to find will be rear projection crts. they're huge, are vulnerable to burn-in, often have reflection issues, geometry issues, convergence issues, and most people strongly prefer natively higher brightness/contrast sets like lcds/dlps/plasmas even if they give up a bit in black levels and color purity.

my dad has a 51" hitachi that he got for about $2000. the picture is really nice and hitatchis are always priced pretty low. supposedly they use the same parts as the more expensive mitsubishis.

What about the Dell plasma that they were selling for sub 3000? Is it any good?

HDTV is a must! You can get a 50 inch LCD or DLP HDTV for about $2,500.

34" direct view is great...if you sit a foot away from the television.

in my house i'm 10' away from a 60" screen

The thing is I don't watch enough TV to justify the 3k++ I would spend on a 60" screen. 1.5kish is about all I would want to spend.

Besides the size any comments on that TV?

You can probably find a solid 47-50" CRT RPTV for ~1.5k. As long as you have decent light control, the picture is excellent. I suggest looking at Panasonic and Hitachi, or going to avsforum.com.

Maybe you should try it 3 times as those are LCD Tv's and not the Plasma's you claimed. Thanks.

Some great deals here:

D-ILA is jvc's implementation of LCoS. LCoS is teed up to become 'the next big thing' in televisions, but jvc televisions do not have a legacy of reliability and the technology is absolutely new. it was available when i purchased as well. looking at sets side-by-side, i was not at all convinced that it was superior enough to risk getting a lemon.

I went with the Panasonic 50' LCD PT50LC14. I also looked closely at the Sony 50' LCD Wega KF50WE620, but all the additional input options on the panasonic and the price I got won me over.

I was looking at that Abe site the other day, and they do have fantastic prices. But what about a service plan? For something that expensive, is it a good investment to get one of the bestbuy warranties, or is the money saved by buying at abe's worth the risk?
