this was the email we got:

Date: April 21, 2005

TO: MCG Faculty and Staff and MCGHI Employees
(Note: MCG= Medical College of Georgia, MCGHI=hospital)

FROM: Dan Rahn and Don Snell

RE: Incident

This morning, a hospital prisoner/patient from the Georgia Department of Corrections was able to escape from his prison guard escort and take the guard’s gun. He attempted to escape from the building. After repeated attempts to get the prisoner to surrender, MCG police took necessary force and shot him. He was declared dead in the Emergency Room after repeated attempts at CPR. A couple of bystanders suffered minor scratches as they attempted to avoid the escapee. Normal operations have resumed.

We want to reassure all of our employees, medical staff, patients, families and students that they are not in any danger.

Representatives of the Department of Corrections are on their way to Augusta and will conduct an internal investigation to determine how this incident occurred. Correctional health care at MCG has been suspended pending investigation by the Department of Corrections and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Its crazy...apparently the guy was shot once in the stomach and died at the hospital?? I didnt think getting shot there was so bad and to be at a hospital none the less.

The teacher posted this on the computer monitors at our desks right b4 our operative (dentistry) lab final, the biggest/hardest test of the year consisting of lots of different restorations/preparations on manakin teeth. As if people werent nervous enough.

To make some discussion

The hospital seems like a great place to get shot.

I guess I should have realized the stomach would be a bad place...I am going to be a doctor...doesnt that make you feel good?

Then again, we have only done head and neck anatomy/disections so thats my excuse. After thursdays practical, I now can tell you the difference between the optic nerve and optic chiasma and can point out every nerve/artery/vein in the mess of wires that is the human neck.

No, you shouldn't of realized that. If you want to get shot, and arms/legs aren't an option, the stomach is bar far the best place to get shot. Just think about it for a second. It doesn't take much more then common sense to figure this out. The brain, lungs, and hearts are vital organs. You can remove the large intestine and stomach and still live for hours. If you get shot there, your two biggest life threatening worries are blood loss and infection. Infection takes days and can be solved by surgery. Blood loss can be fixed with a T-shirt and duct tape.

My guess is either these cops didn't give this guy immediate care, they used a very large caliber bullet (like a sniper rifle) or .45 handgun that blew a big hole in him and severed a vein, or he died from other complications.

The stomach is a painful place to get shot, but it is by far the best place to get hit in your torsoe. How the hell could you think otherwise?

RDIT: The cops could of also man handled him after he was shot increasing blood loss dramatically. The escape could of also wrestled the cops after being shot. There have been many instances of this in the past. Anything is possible.

Most people that die after gun shot wounds to the abdomen die from internal bleeding.

Which is the same thing as blood loss. Blood is still exiting the circulatory system.

I've heard that the stomach and the kneecap are the two most painful places to get shot, but like Wacki said, I think it's among the safter places to get shot (aside from appendages or shoulders). That said, nobody's body is prepared to have a bullet go through it. I would take a shot in any of my appendages or shoulders for enough money, but I don't think I'd take one in the gut.

That is only due to antibiotic resistant bacteria. The trick with hospitals is that you have to get in, and then get out as quick as possible. Either that, or wrap yourself in a bubble. Death from antibiotic resistant bacteria is very common in hospitals. It is a much much bigger problem then most people realize.

Doubtful, were talking Medical College of Georgia Police here...theyre like rent a cops whose soul purpose is to ticket people for not stopping at crosswalks and students for parking in the patient lot. I was surprised they even had guns let alone would use them. I thought they only carried mase and a 4 foot rope.

But your argument about the stomach makes sense, I knew I wasnt making it up.

Would you rather get shot in the stomach or the crotch?

Ha ha, I like this part. My wife is in dental hygiene school, and the restorative board exam was the one she was dreading the most. She hates restorative. Luckily she passed on the first try. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would think the shoulder wouldnt be a particularly good place to get shot just because of the subclavian/axillary arteries + the brachial plexus. Although I guess if the bullet lodges in the clavicle, SCM or something youll be good to go.

The answer should be obvious.

You can lose 90% of your liver and survive, you can lose 90% of your stomach and survive, your can lose a crapload of your intestine and survive.

Your crotch..... well do you really want to lose 90% of it?

On a mortality note, just think about the blood flow down there.

What kind of restorative stuff do hygenists do?? Sealants and putting on matrix bands?? Just curious because they arent taught to drill/fill and crowns etc. Mostly they do scaling/polishing/probing/xraying and general analysis/counseling.

I would think it is more due to the fact that hospitals are the most popular public places to go for people at high risk of death.

This is 100% correct. The stomach is called the second brain because there are 100 billion nerve cells down there. There is even a book entitled "The second brain". The kneecap is painful because of a decent amount of nerve cells in combination with grinding of joints with bone fragments.

From the CDC website:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol7no2/wenzel.htm

Nosocomial bloodstream infections are a leading cause of death in the United States. If we assume a nosocomial infection rate of 5%, of which 10% are bloodstream infections, and an attributable mortality rate of 15%, bloodstream infections would represent the eighth leading cause of death in the United States.
