If I were to say a certain action is "categorically unwise," which of the following does that mean:

1) Said action is, as a rule, always unwise,
2) Said action is, in general, unwise. However, in specific situations it might not be, or
3) Other, please specify.

I vote 1, though I would except 2 as a vernacularization/hyperbole simply implying heavy emphasis.

I'm going 2. Mostly just because I'm a contrarian.

I will vote number three. You see categorically incorrect has a latin root word categorious. coming out of the root words "categ" meaning tiger, and "gorious" meaning hunter. This indicates that aggression was origionally implied in the word categorically, perhaps some animalism as well. The ancient roman city gorious was a violent town where pirates often raped and pillaged poets.I guess what im trying to say is yes it means number one, but thats not its full connotation.
