You can see a video of it online, but you might need to be in the UK to do so.

Worth £160,000 to him ($308,855.07)

It's been said before, but I can't resist.

You may also need to be in the UK to know why anyone would care that Williams hit 147. /images/graemlins/confused.gif

It was 1/3 odds (-300) that there would be a 147+ this year when he was on the brown. I missed mopping it all up by a fraction of a second.

Its running out the table in snooker. When you see pros on ESPN break and run out 9 ball, it looks impressive. This is alternating one red ball shot and one black ball shot fifteen times, and THEN running out the balls in order. I play pretty decent pool and I have trouble running more than 2 or 3 balls on a snooker table. This is a 37 or so shot run...

OK. This is how the balls are laid out on a snooker table:

http://www3.sympatico.ca/eric.perreault/img/snooker.gif

One player starts the frame by hitting a red ball with a white ball.

The first colour you have to pot is a red ball. After you do this, you can pot any other colour, which score as follows

Yellow = 2, Green = 3, Brown = 4, Blue = 5, Pink = 6, Black = 7.

After you pot a colour, that ball gets replaced on the table, and you then have to pot a red again etc. until all 15 reds have been potted.

Then you move onto the colours, potting them in ascending numerical value order. So after you have potted 15 reds and 15 colours, you then pot the yellow, then green........finishing with the black.

Thus the maximum you can make at one visit to the table occurs when you pot all 15 reds and pot 15 blacks with them, then pot all 7 colours (15 + 15*7 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7) which works out as 147.

The table is 12 ft long, which is bigger than a pool table. The pockets are also much smallers than those of a pool table.

Thus making a 147 break is pretty damn exceptional, and Williams is the 5th person to ever do it at a World Championship.

I'll leave it to you to explain how Steve James made a 16 red clearance /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Isn't the only way to score higher than a 147 contingent upon the opponent scratching, or fouling somehow? Seems vaguely familiar...

I had a similar bad beat story. I found william hill offering odds on a boxing fight. They were closing their line at 03:00. The fight finished at 02:50. I hardly had any money left on my debit card, so after maxing that out I went upstairs to get the details of my credit card. I managed to register the details and put £500 on Lacy to win (would have netted me £450ish), at 03:00:12

Ugh.

If your opponent fouls, and leaves the white in such a position that you cannot hit both sides of a red, you can nominate any color as a red ball to start your break with.

The actual maximum therefore (unless someone knows of even more obscure circumstances), I believe is 155.

FWIW, if you make more than 147, you do not qualify for the 147k bonus money. (or you didnt in previous years)

Basically if your opponent fouls and leaves the white ball in such a place that you can not hit both sides of the same red ball then you get a "free ball", which means you can pot any ball in lieu of the red. So you could pot a blue ball (scoring 1) and then pot a black. So in theory you could make a 155 break.

Matthew Stevens just came within 3 pots of hitting a 147. £80,500 at stake. That must hurt.

Not impressed at all, since the record in straight pool is like 509.

The article was placed in the "Snooker" section so maybe the author felt this was unnecessary.
