Revealed today, and to be announced officially next week, the Red Sox have hired Bill James. Apparently, he will serve as a Senior Baseball Consultant--or some such title--but he will be working for the Sox full time.

No truth to the rumor that the team will be managed by Deep Blue next season, however.

James knows more about baseball than any person on the planet. He also seems, from his writing, to be quite stubborn. Both may bode well for the Sox.

what will really be a change is when a team hires a stathead as a manager. then we will really see some improvement. i am sure someone like james could manage better than at least half of the managers just on statistical knowledge.
