who would you say are the top 20 players on the site? I was having a discussion with a friend about this. Curious as to what all of your thoughts are.

Real question should be..

Of the 20 top sng players on PP, how many actually read or post here?

That would be more interesting to me than knowing the names of them.

your challenge is met: i made a list. but i'm not sharing it.

in other news, this topic has been done, except not in silly list fashion, previously. do a search for something along the lines of "who are the top 215 players" or something.

Make your own list and I'll critique it.

I find that any regular step 5 players have inflated stats on their ITM percentage on PokerProphecy.

I'm not saying Gigabet isn't a great player but I've seen a lot of hands where he tries to "outplay" people with middle pairs postflop. Once a lot of players know this they can exploit it like crazy. Once you have a hand you mini-raise his blind and watch him stop and go or bet out with his middle pocket pairs. Often he'll have all his chips in the pot with two outs.

Instead of relying on PokerProphecy data to determine a player's ability how about actual data:

10-6|9-10|8-9|7-10|6-6|5-13|4-16|3-16|2-8|1-5|

There's the last known Step 5 place distribution of SwiftSteal. Sure it's not a huge sample size but neither is PokerProphecy.

Unfortunately for PokerProphecy ....I have trouble believing their data is accurate. My stats at the $200 level are signifigantly lower on Prophecy than they actually were during that time period, meanwhile my stats at the $30s are WAY higher than they actually are. It has me moneying like 50%, which is absurd and not close to my actual money rate. It's hard to imagine how they even acheived such numbers through random samples.

However one thing I notice about Prophpecy is that when someone has truly dreadful stats, they usually are terrible.

This is very true. The tricky part is determining if those high 30's/low 40's stats are accurate and whether I really should give *some* people credit.

john_
04-19-2005, 04:10 PM
I find its better to use PP stats to determine tightness / looseness of players in the earlier levels.

Like if I hold QQ at level 1 or 2 and I raise and get re-raised all in by a player who has PP stats of 44 / 50 - 46.8% ITM then I usually figure he's got me beat. If, however, their stats are trash I'm basically auto-calling with this hand...probably JJ too.

What disadvantage would people have in posting the top players? Would 2+2's try to avoid them? Assuming 2+2's are smart anyways, isn't that beneficial to the top players as the tourneys fill up anyhow and more fish are in them. I haven't found anyone who has posted here. Even someone could throw a top 10.

Caponeny

agreed, the toughest part about prohecy is determining the borderline people, with a call like QQ, i fold fifty and call fifty with people around 40%, obviously depends on what their chip stack is looking like and if I have them covered. Overall prophecy makes mistakes but has a good +2/-2 error variance with over a 100 tourneys recorded.

Gigabet is pretty much the best online poker player in the world and I don't think it's all that close. He's also the LAGgiest winning player on 2+2 and I don't think it's close /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

A lot of what he does is based on getting a big stack and he'll take lots of risks to get one. The KJo thread in the MTT forum ought to be required reading for SNG's, too.

1) Post your list that you've worked hard accumulating over years of grinding the SNG tournies.
2) Top player gets mad about having his secret identity outed, and changes screen name to avoid idiot railbirds on the Step 5.
3) Your list is no longer valid, nobody is helped, you must work on a new list.

Personally, I think gigabet likes talking to the railbirds...why do you think he's using swiftsteal playing every single step 5 right now and replying anytime someone types to him?

On my records you are at least a top 100 player, rojosox... I have been keeping track of all the players I encounter playing the 200s and 100s that have pokerprophecy stats of 40% or higher with over 100 tourneys recorded... you're on my list which is only 66 people long..

Pokerprophecy shows you at 40.6% ITM in 709 tourneys with an average buyin of $184

However, others have you WAY outclassed in this measure, here are the ones I have with above 45% ITM:

ALGA_
aida8
cappy88
daltonator
edoiler (a whopping 48.5% but only 132 tourneys)
pokerman
pokerstarr3
surrealpoker

I can also make the assumption that people that are above a certain percentage have overestimated means (a safe assumption), and so subtract one standard error from their percentage (this controls also for number of tourneys played). When I do this, these are the players with after subtracting a standard error are still >= 43% ITM:

cappy88
daltonator
edoiler
pokerman
pokerstarr3
surrealpoker

seeing as how someone rated you as a big swinging dick of 100s and 200s, i'll help you out. but from now on i'm only providing help if requested by players that guy says are in the top 5.

Two links:

his list was alphabetical. i'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're not the worst amongst that list. even though i think i've only played one game against you ever.

Ahhh, but that thread is more enlightening than first meets the eye.

Just like Desdia's old threads are much more enlightening than I ever thought possible...

[/ QUOTE ]

Their data is not updated much, and not very accurate. It has me winning much more than I do, and doesn't have more than half my games accounted for. I got a good laugh out of that site saying I was a "pro," especially with so much data missing.
