Firstly, i know nearly nothing about photography. I enjoy taking pictures when travelling and probably will take more of an interest in photography soon.

I currently have this (http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/DX/DXA.HTM), it's ok but a lot of pictures come out way worse than expected, esp. with when using the flash since the focus and contrast seems awful but it's probably just my amateur ways. Anyhow I'm thinking of getting this this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002AHQM8/qid=1113933663/br=1-1/ref=br_lf_p_1//103-5374058-1519804?v=glance&s=photo&n=493814). Good idea? Worth it? Any better suggestions?

Thanks.

Panasonic FZ20. Unless something new has come out recently that I haven't heard about the Panasonic FZ20 is the best non-SLR digital camera you can buy. I've seen them and used em and I personally quite like them.

I have this canon S500 elph (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001G6U5W/102-6909001-0788142?v=glance) and i love it.

It's 5 megapixels instead of the 4 megapixel one you were looking at. I like it cause it fits in my pocket or bag without much hassle, and i can get it out without causing a lot of fuss.

It takes great pictures.

For any semi-serious photography at all the S500 is not going to cut it, you gotta sacrifice on size for picture taking ability, which is what jay sounds like he wants to do anyway

meh, i was responding more to his interest in travelling and vacation photos. for serious photography this is obviously not the best choice.

imo, you are incorrect about the S500 sacrificing quality for size.

Canon A or S series.

goto dpreview.com for all the info you need.

The S series is great as they take awesome pictures and will still fit in your pocket. Canon is the [censored].

i was going to recommend the s300 elph. i've been doing lots of research lately on digicams and that's the one i'm gonna get next time it goes on sale. if you have more money, then by all means go for the s500.

Jay, I've been very happy with this one (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001G6UEI/qid=1114029536/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8__i1_xgl23/002-9190780-7948054?v=glance&s=photo&n=541966), though I have no idea how it compares to others. It's small and lightweight, takes good quality pics and movies as far as I can tell, has lots of options to let you adjust image quality/picture size, was a cinch to transfer pics to the computer, etc... I have no complaints about it.
