Why does 2+2 say I have read posts I haven't

ok maybe i'm an idiot but this really annoys me. when i click on OOT for example, a thread comes up with in the replies column 8 with new replies in <font color="red"> 3 </font> .

now if i know i haven't read that thread, why aren't the black and red numbers the same? this really pisses me off.

Others can correct me if Im wrong because Im not sure, but I think it has to do when you signed off last.

Like, if you sign off at 1am, and then come back the next morning, all the threads that had posts between 1am and the time you sign on are active.

But, if you close your browser, then come back on like 5 minutes later, its only the posts that came in those 5 minutes that are considered new.

I keep my name logged in. So when I close my browser it starts the clock so to speak? what if i go to a different site and come back?
