In 3/6 limit games, is it common for all players to just play w/ $1 chips or do most people play w/ $1s and $5s? I have been playing at a small BM casino in Washington and no player ever has $5s when I sit down. Sometimes the dealer slowly takes the 5s out of the game, even when I only put in exact bets/raises.

What gives?

The game usually goes faster if everyone uses a single denomination (and of course if that denomination is a divisor of the small bet). This is because the bets and raises are always in an orderly multiple - it makes it much easier to cut out your chips, you don't have some half-drunk dumbass trying to figure out how to reraise to $18 with reds and whites, etc.

I guess that is understandable. I just don't like raising after the turn and having to count out 12 chips. I have to spend soo much time doing that I can't see the reactions of the other players after I have bet. Then when it's a kill pot, 24 chips to raise the turn or river? It just seems crazy.

I think I will keep coming with my mixed stack.

How big does the pot "appear" to be with $50 in red and $30 in white? It appears much bigger with $80 in white. Players are more apt to tip bigger on larger pots. Sounds like you had an experienced dealer. /images/graemlins/cool.gif

If that is the problem, then you just need to play more. LOL

But seriously, it keeps the game moving faster overall. Players can easily see two stacks of 3 for the big bet and 4 of 3 for a big bet raise, etc, while stacking out 2 reds and 2 whites will often cause players to ask what the bet is, question if you put enough out, etc.

I generally keep my whites in stacks of 25 when playing a full kill game, very easy to pull a chip off a stack and push it out and divide into two equal stacks. If am taking up too much table space with my stacks I color up 100 to red, but I do not play them (unless I can talk the table in to a red chip game /images/graemlins/laugh.gif ).

At the 3-6 game at the B&M I play at in Spokane it is nearly all white chips. That is what everyone is used to and what everyone feels comfortable. They just added a 2-10 spread game and with that there is about half red, half white chips.

One reason I think people like to use just white chips is the feeling of having a multiple stacks of chips on the table as opposed to just a few red chips.

Interesting. When I sit down in a $3/6, the very first thing I do is split all my stacks of 20 into stacks of 12. Very rare that I see any other players do this... it just seems so obvious to me!

'Course other things that seem obvious to me, like running a 3/6 game will all $3 chips except for the stray 1 for the small blind, are very unpopular (yes, I'm aware of the psychological reasoning, and yes, I know I'll never see a casino do it my way)... so I am used to that.

I'm curious why you think it's quicker for the half-drunk dumbass to mistakenly count out 17 $1 chips from his rack, throw them all over the table, get shown his mistake by the dealer, comprehend his mistake, and toss in the 18th chip.

I've seen 3/6 played with mostly $1s (in California, as I recall, I was about the only person bringing $5 chips to the table) and with $1s and $5s (in AC virtually always, and I remember others using reds in the Mirage 3/6). The Bike dealers loved it when I used $2 chips for the $2/4 game. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Obviously I'm partial to using fewer higher-value chips but to each his own.

We'll have to agree to disagree, then, because I'm quite confident counting out numbers like 12 and 18 takes more time than calculating 5*3 + 1*3 in one's head.

I keep stacks of 25, but I always have 12 chips in my hand that I shuffle and play with. That way I can count out 3, 6, or 12 chips quickly without even looking. Same idea for 4/8.

When I play 3/6, I keep my chips in stacks of 12. It seems like the natural thing to do at a 3/6 table, but I've never seen anyone else do it.

3/6, I sit down with 20 red chips, 20 white chips. But eventually, I just play with whatever the other people have sat down with.

Back when Moheghan Sun in CT had a poker room their 3-6 and 6-12 game was spread with Turtles (named for the Turtle emblem on the chip) they were a 3$ denomination. Made things real easy.

I miss that room /images/graemlins/frown.gif
