Coldplay Parachutes came out in 2000 as I recall.
I don't believe anyone had really heard of them before then.

Those guys can't be good enough for one nomination, let alone two.

If this includes any genre of music, there are only a few contenders. To not include the most successful artist of the 90s (Garth Brooks) would be a shame, especially with some crap named "Neutral Milk Hotel" being nominated.

Then again, I highly doubt this "tourney" will last long...but still....

Nirvana makes a lot of sense here too. But "Neutral Milk Hotel"??? To be the best band of the 90s, I think more than 3 people need to like them.

Neutral Milk Hotel is good dude. They shouldn't be nominated though, but I can't believe you have the right to criticize them when you listen to Simple [censored] Plan /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Touche - even though I listed precisely ONE song for a workout mix...

I'll give them a chance - what type of music would you call them? I'm going to go with some kind of underground punk/ska type thing based on their name alone, even though I'm probably wrong.

I still think to not list Garth in this would be a shame, even though all the [censored] country-haters would never let it happen.

Though they never reached mass success, their second album is one of the most highly regarded albums in the indie community to come out of the 90s.

FWIW:

[ QUOTE ]
In its 10th anniversary issue, Magnet voted it the best album of the past decade, above Nirvana's "In Utero" and Radiohead's "OK Computer"

Like all classic art, it is widely misunderstood; yet to some, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea has become a riddle the likes of The Wasteland-- an impossibly rich text that begs to be deciphered, yet continually evades any singular interpretation.

[/ QUOTE ]

From a pitchfork article in which they named their second album the 4th best of the 90s. (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/top/90s/index10.shtml)

I would never expect them to win such a contest, but I still felt like nominating them anyway.

Really?? wow. Dont get me wrong, I love the decemberists. But, I dont even think the two can be compared in terms of quality.

btw... read the salon article I quoted, as it is based on a comparison of the two.

One more follow up...

This is a "best of" not a "most popular" contest.

There is a significant portion of the music listening population that doesnt know who the velvet underground were. That doesnt mean they were not one of the best bands of all time.

Agreed. I can't believe the guy actually compared them to freaking T.S. Eliot. I can just see him sitting alone in his room, wearing horn-rimmed glasses and a corduroy jacket, believing that he is some sort of arbiter of good taste whose talents are wasted writing reviews for the unwashed masses.

I really hope you're not saying Garth Brooks isn't among the best. There's a reason he packed Central Park and sold out every stadium he ever played worldwide, and it wasn't clever marketing.

(I also know who the Velvet Underground were, but this whole idea quickly turned into "best rock band" - which really isn't fair to any other genre of music that totally lacks representation. George Strait belongs too, but he doesn't fit into just one decade.)

I dont like country music, but at the same time recognize that GB has a lot of talent. (same thing with, say, radiohead).

I dont feel I can really say what is great country music and what is good country music, as I just dont have an ear for it. (same with, say, classical)
