I'm being a nit, but the GTA's are technically a 3rd person shooter because your veiwpoint is such that you can see your own character. Another example of a 3rd person shooter is Metal Gear Solid.

It matters because in a first person shooter, the screen is supposedly your (the player's) field of vision, so you're experience exactly what your character would be. In a 3rd person game, you often have the ability to view things around corners and behind you that your character should not be able to see.

I played CS competitively for about 3 years, in one of the two dominating clans in Norway (at the time). And I honestly think that Q3 is way more addictive, and fun than CS is. With CTF, 1on1, TDM, etc, and different tactics / skillsets for each map / mode. I feel it's a lot more rewarding to be a competitive Q3 player than CS. You hardcore CS players might want to give it a shot.

Also, Goldeneye on N64 with pistols only and License to kill activated rocks (preferably on the archives map).

Not really. I'm actually trying to find out how many people think each of the three is the best since the console/halo thread has got me thinking there are a significant number of people who like Halo the best.

As for Half-Life it's good, but it's blown away by Half-Life 2. If we're talking about "best all time" then maybe Hl2 makes the cut, but my vote would probably either go to the original Doom or possibly Quake.

its so simple, halo1's gameplay is a little better, finding a good game is a horrible task that involves driving, sometimes far, if you are good. halo2's gameplay is hardly less entertaining, and way easier to get a competitive game. but i bet 1% of the consumers of both games, buy the game for the story mode. anytime you ever hear halo1/2 mentioned ever, always assume its about some form of multiplayer...

As for most "advanced" FPS games for their time, we need to mention Marathon and Dark Forces.

No. ID's new engine is considered by many to be the current state of the art. I'm on the fence as I think the physics in Source are better, but the lighting in Doom3 is best. Moreover, while Doom 3 is not much on plot (note: neither were 1 and 2) it's the scariest FPS I've ever played and definitely rivals the original Resident Evil in terms of creepiness. Maybe you were looking for a more involved plot? Too bad. Doom's a wall-crawler. Always was, always will be.

I still don't understand why you think this thread is about "best all time" or what else you think is currently superior to the games I listed in terms of technology. You might have been able to ding me for not listing FarCry but you didn't, now did you?

Tell you what, I'll post a "vote for the best FPS of all time" and list all 60 [censored] options including Marathon, Battlefield 1942, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3 Arena, Doom, Doom II, Doom 3, Duke Nukem, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2004, America's Army, Halo, Halo 2, Wolfenstein, Return To Castle Wolfenstein, FarCry, Medal Of Honor, Golden Eye, and every other FPS a douchebag with a mouse or controller thinks is cool. Well it was way way before eoL times. From BETA 6.1 to around CS retail actually. The clan was called Clan Cheezy. And we weren't all that good in terms of international skill, but beat up pretty much any Norwegian clan at the time (some even consisted of what would later be eoL players!).

I'll go ahead and agree with those who said Quake 1. Though I have much less experience with the newer games (and I've never played Halo before), I just don't think there was anything that even remotely challenged Quake back in the day. I think it has also stood the test of time nearly as well as StarCraft, as there are still many servers/clans/etc. that exist for the game.

Just thinking about it makes me want to go download CTF or TF, but I'm sure the main people who still play the game are very good. And I like to pick on newbs. /images/graemlins/cool.gif
