as in World Of Warcraft, any of you guys have friends that are addicted to it and spent an unhealthy amount of time on it?

well my dad is right now, i estimate he averages about 8 hours of play per day, he's 59 and retired, and i'm serious

i can either just hope he gets over it after about another 500 hours of play, or I could say something

or is it my place to say anything? he's not neccesarilly doing anything wrong

complete and utter waste of time and life

as opposed to poker - which wastes time and life but can occasionally be profitable but is usually not to the majority of poker players ....

I was thinking this was a "Whip'em Out Wednesday" thread about Opie and Anthony.

It's such a horrible PANSY MMORPG it makes me puke. Give me full loot and murder counts and I'm down to play.

Piz0wn3red!!! from this forum plays a VERY unhealthy amount. He will go on 3-day stretches of not leaving his apartment. He's 23 and is potentially good with chicks, yet he prefers to waste his time with this.

the difference is poker makes you money and WoW costs money. This should be good enough.

He's retired, so who cares? He could be spending 8 hours out on the golf course, or 8 hours in the garden, or 8 hours sitting outside the diner chatting with all the locals, or 8 hours getting drunk at the strip club. WoW doesn't sound so bad /images/graemlins/wink.gif

It's his free time, he's earned it.

A lot of times these things run their course eventually.

How about finding something more interesting for the both of you to do together?

i enjoy WoW, but i'm glad that it is only on ym friends account and he lives in LA while i go to school in santa barbara, about an hour and a half away

i know it is a great waste of time, but after 4-tabling for 3+ hours, it's nice to just unwind and play the game

although sometimes the game is pure work, and that is lame, but god damn is it addicting

It's very important to get a regimen of exercise if you do anything which requires sitting around all day. A good time to whip your dad into shape. After retirement, health is very important.

Actually, health is always important.

I really don't know much about it, except I used to get some email spam from them.

I used to follow wrestling forums, but I haven't even watched in the past three years or so.

From what I heard, the wrestling in WOW isn't very good, but I guess you don't go into it expecting to see Benoit vs. Liger or something.

yes he is, he is wasting his time on a game that requires zero skill, not to mention the hours he could have logged on a more constructive game...

I play WOW, been trying to get more hours of poker in recently so between that and school haven't had much time for it, but its a fun game.

I have some friends who definately play it more than they probably should (since they don't have jobs and should be spending more time fleecing the fishies) but not so much as to be unhealthy since I can still usually count on them to hang out when I actually get a chance.

I know some other people who play it an unhealthy amount, but to be honest I don't really give much of a crap about them.

My dad is the same way when it comes to online poker. Everytime I go home to visit, he is playing about 60% of the time. Wouldn't be so bad except even after a year hes still not very good (probably somewhere between not quite beating the rake and break even).

I've been playing a lot of WoW since I broke my foot and it's too much of a pain to go out. I'd be making more money playing poker, but I'm having a lot more fun playing WoW. I get to game with friends who live hundreds of miles away, for one thing.

Sure it can soak up all your free time, but as long as you're having fun so what?

My attitude would be if he is retired, he has worked hard and earned his free time to do what he wants. Can you ever beat or finish this game? I would just hope he does that instead of creating an arguement. If it's possible he will eventually and then probably be done with it. I'm unfamilar with this game but could you play it with him? There is a lot of things I would love to do with my Dad that I just can't because we don't share all that many interests.

WoW can be incredibly addictive. An example of this would be a friend who this weekend refused to go out with a girl he's been seeing so he could stay in and "level".... If it's fun in reasonable doses its fine (and as a retiree he has earned a break).. just hope he gets to level 60 fast with his druid and then rediscovers the world outside of WoW. If youre interested in laughing at the addiction of WoW players: www.purepwnage.com (http://www.purepwnage.com) (not to give away all of the story line of the most recent episode but in it; the guy dates a girl through Wow, makes out with his screen/her level 40 elf princess, and eventually is hospitalized as he refuses to eat claiming that "my spirit is so high I don't need food.. I can just sit here and regenerate")
... and I thought being my addiction to Counter Strike back in High School was bad...

If he were addicted to heroin, I could see a need for intervention.

As it is, he's addicted to a drug that is completely harmless physically. Most of us are, though. I don't think it is necessary for you to intervene here.

i'm a WoW surviver. i posted a bit ago about how it was ruining my life and after that i just straight up quit cold turkey. it actually wasn't that bad but sometimes i still really want to play. i didn't cancel my account or anything, i'm just letting it sit until summer when i can actually afford to play.

if he's a retiree and he ain't got [/i][censored] to do then i say let him be as long as he's having fun and it's not upsetting anyone else. he'll probably get over it soon enough. or maybe not.

Oh, I've given him plenty of books to read (He currently has Harrington's book) and I try to give him advice whenever I'm there. In fact I've guided him to 3 MTT victories (all small tourneys, the biggest win was $700) just by giving him advice while watching.

He still is just way too passive.

I bought it, installed it, created an account, and never played it.

Reason: Too addicting (and no, i'm not joking).

I've got way too much poker to play and casino whoring to do.... why would I waste 8 hours a day playing a RPG? I got too wrapped up in Puzzle Pirates to play any poker, and I don't want it to happen again. On a side note, I was able to trade my friend my WOW account (that he woudl start paying for) in exchagne for signup up under my referral link at freepsps.com (http://www.freepsps.com).
