I'm going to admit it - I love the whole 80s power ballad thing.

My favorite is probably Boston's "Amanda". Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" may or may not count as a real "power ballad". But I figured I'd see...

What are your favorites?

The fact that you call them "Power Ballads" is hilarious.

I thought that was the commonly accepted referenct term these days. What do you call them?

Whatever you're calling them, you know the type of song I'm talking about. Just ignore the name, and go with it.

Yes. I think it's probably a common term, but is still funny. How about "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi?

Hehe...ok, for clarification, I'm talking about the whole 80s trend of rock bands with big hair trying to combine the love song (the ballad) with their hard rocking roots (the "power").

A power ballad is a sure sign that the band responsible for it has jumped the shark

On a side note I think the fact that I just used the term "jumped the shark" is sure sign that the phrase has definately jumped the shark

Anthrax - Nfb Lyrics
We fell in love at first sight
I can?t explain the feelings
When I first saw you
We were so so happy
A life of love sweet honey child
You?ll always be mine
But then I played the fool
I never meant to hurt you
Or sleep with all your friends
We reconciled we found ourselves
Our love was meant to be
Oh baby can?t you see

You left me standing in the mud
Crying to myself
A heart so full of pain
But we fell in love again
This time forever
True love prevails over all
She got hit by a truck

I've always been partial to "The Ghetto Boys" Gagster of love

"She got big titties I squeeze em and hold em

while she sucks my dick and licks my scrotum

She got A friend I'll Fvck her too

Together we'll play a game of Switcheroo"

that song just OOZES romance /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Alone Again - Dokken

I Remember You - Skid Row

There's probably a dozen more that I like but I'm too lazy to think of all of them right now. I played guitar quite a bit when I was younger and have to say that power ballads are fun to play.

Also part of the reason I'm asking this question - I've only been playing for about 5 or 6 months now, but these are very cool.

A couple more I thought of:

The Ballad of Jayne - L.A. Guns

Close My Eyes Forever - Ozzy & Lita Ford

But it goes through "Mr. Big" along its path down the mobius strip.

/images/graemlins/grin.gif Now if I could only find the original flourescent hot pink Kramer Barreta guitar that I so stupidly sold when I was 18 years old I could stop doing this!!!

I don't guess Love Hurts (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE57B1ED94BAB7020CE9D374A C7AD53FA06CB50FF8118294659C9A63847834375EE51E9D8CD B1FA27E12CECB32ABB5B0ACCC8EE56F99064373F8BE4A36928 5E36&sql=17:910511~T00C) was originally a power ballad, but Nazareth (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE57B1ED94BAB7020CE9D374A C7AD53FA06CB50FF8118294659C9A63847834375EE51E9D8CD B1FA27E12CECB32ABB5B0ACCC8EE56F99064373F8BE4A36928 5E36&sql=33:ml5k8qfmbtz4) made it one.

The best version of that song though is the Bob Pollard and Kim Deal duet (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE57B1ED94BAB7020CE9D374A C7AD53FA06CB50FF8118294659C9A63847834375EE51E9D8CD B1FA27E12CECB32ABB5B0ACCC8EE56F99064373F8BE4A36928 5E36&sql=33:kvdsyl1oxpcb) version from the "Love & a .45" soundtrack. Kickass.

So would Queensryche's "Silent Lucidity" be classified as such or is that not what you were going for? It's mostly a quiet song with a guitar solo thrown in there for fun.

But Extreme's "More than Words" wouldn't since it's rather lacking the "power" side of the equation?

White Snake- Here I Go Again

I find it hard to believe that it's disputable, unless you don't count this song as a power ballad.
