Villain has just sat down, most of the table behind me had been loose and pretty passive, which is why I limped pf.

I checked the turn planning to call a bet on the river because I felt he'd fold a weaker hand without a straight and raise a K.

The river card gives me a chop at best, so i'm risking 1 bet to win 1.25 - small pot, so I fold.

Good? Bad? Ugly?

I don't think open limping 89s from there is the way to go.

Id probably fold the river as well.

I'd bet the turn (and fold if he check-raises), and fold/check through the river.

Without the turn bet, I think the river is very close either way. You are actually getting 1.75 to 1 on a call.
